If someone could help me out with this i'd be grateful.
Backstory:

Grandparents just moved house. They are on Tiscali and called up to
change their dsl to a new number.

We've been told the connection has been updated and thought we should
be able to just plug it in and have it work. No such luck.

I actually bought them a proper Buffalo WGR modem/router instead of
using their crappy little USB sagem but neither of them work now.

Trying their own Sagem I have set it up but 2 things may happen:
1. Error to the effect of "The USB bandwidth is full. Unplug all other
USB devices"
2. When I press connect (setting up the connection manually via 'add a
connection') i instantly get "No Dial Tone". There definitely is one.

Sagem modem dsl light continues to flash slowly on and off.

As for the Buffalo I can't find ANYWHERE In the router http admin panel
the place to add the adsl username and password (not that they have
changed). It just continually says that the dsl connection failed.

I'm at the stage where I just want to uninstall everything and start
from scratch. Now I find out that the tiscali cd has been lost. Could
anyone possibly please please post a link to where I could download the
files? Have requested a replacement from Tiscali (via email) but god
knows how long that'll take. I called up their support (0870 number) to
be told after a long message 'too busy now, call back later'.

If anyone has any pointers I'd appreciate it.

to get a file for a hardcopy.

look at Properties, then TCP/IP Properties for the connection

Control Panel Administrative Tools - Services has Event Viewer
where you can see network errors, there are many management
tools here to see whether the Local Network is started or stopped.
If the PC config looks ok, you haven't dug a bigger hole by
changing things randomly AND both Buffalo and Sagam
won't sync then it could be the line.
There are a few free tools, with learning curves, like Netstumbler,
which shows what's around locally, that you could possibly
connect to, wirelessly, and it's main properties. also
Ethereal (with a steep learning curve) that logs what
is happening when to try to connect through a chosen
network adapter (PC's can have more than one network adapter).
But if the line isn't (in spite of assurances) network enabled, then
that is your problem.

Have you got any links for this - Buffalo don`t even list it on their
european site !

Can you unplug everything else from the line and try again, also if
there is a 2 part BT master socket take the lower front half cover off
and plug into the test socket behind. If its no good there you need a
BT engineer - ask you ISP to arrange one.

As for transferring a Tiscali connection to another house/line, I done that
earlier this year, about 6 months ago. It took around 5 working days to sort
it. Didn't receive any notification that the service had been transferred
successfully but just kept trying everyday until it worked. I have the same
modem as your grandparents and it has worked flawlessly at both my previous
and current address.

But I should point out that I have now cancelled my Tiscali account because
they are totally incompetant.
