Yes, they _do_ have backup dial-up. I've been with <n> over a year and only
used dial-up once (to see if it worked).

I've been with <n> since Jan & have found my ADSL 512 lite (no DU
backup, extra email adds, web space & dynamic IP for £22.95) to be fast
& reliable. They have from today, started the move over to Giganews for
non-binaries & their own server still carries binaries with ~5 day
retention & so-so completion but at full b/w!
They also keep their customers informed of issues, possible down-time &
news by optional email subscription, ADSL guide forums but not so much
in their own NGs, oddly. Last week, they beefed up their DNS & I was
minimally effected by the downed link to the US earlier this week. They
were also quick off the mark regarding the Blaster virus. My very
consistent speeds from ADSL guide speed test are 58 & 31KB/s. They also
have access to BBC B/B which seems to be restricted to participating
ISPs or certainly was.

I joined Eclipse, no problems with the service but their Customer
Service is crap. I have had several issues and if they can't answer they
ignore them, and ignore them and ignore them. In point of fact it was
only when I looked at switching and asked them how I cancelled that I
finally got some answers (well replies they couldn't' actually come up
with any answers)
Oh and I discovered that a back-up dial connection will cost you extra.
Can't recommend (or not) Nildram don't know anything about their
service.

I've been using Eclipse for about 4 months now - seems pretty damn good
with three quibbles:
1) customer service aren't very good at customer service.
2) news server has small number of groups - though if you mail them the
names of groups you want added they do add them within a week.
3) their DNS servers are occasionally flakey.
On the plus side, the speed and reliability are excellent, and out of the
blue they recently (yesterday ?) implemented a virus scanner for all
inbound and outbound email (yes I already run an AV tool but it's nice the
have the ISP do most of the donkey work for me).

I have found Eclipse customer service ok so far, they have been quick to
reply to my speed problems (but not sorted it out yet).
Newsgroups list is small as noted above.

Nothing to hide. I've mailed them on a couple of matters, and apart from
the new newgroup requests (below) they never replied - not even when I
used their customer support tool rather than emailing them. To me, the
lack of reply is the first sign of bad customer support.
Wondered about this myself, but since they added the groups I wanted I
am not missing anything (I don't frequent binaries groups which I
understand are the ones that frequently have short retention times and
cause people problems).
Haven't bothered with that yet, though it's a good thought.
See:

It rejects virus-laden emails rather than merely tagging them, but sends
you an email to tell you what it has done. It uses the McAfee engine.
