- No dial tone?
- Posted by Mungo \two sheds\ Toadfoot on September 15th, 2003
I've been with Pipex for a few days and everything's been fine, but today I
keep getting "no dial tone" messages and I have to reboot before I can get
online.
There *is* a dial tone and nothing's changed, so...any ideas?

Ta.
I think it's loading properly - it seems to go iffy when it (the pc) has
been idle for an hour or two, or put in standby then woken up.

Standard'ish problem with USB modems (having to reboot after being in
stand by mode), don't know the work around which will be right for you
as the best one for my ISP is to get a NIC & use that instead of USB
but check things like power save on the USB port (off) & seeing if
there are any newer drives (both for your modem & your USB chipset)...

You`re using a USB modem and were disconnected, i`m almost certain :-}
(Speedtouch 330 USB at a guess)
Common problem, most frequently noticed by people with a VIA chipset on
their motherboard, although the problem is not confined to VIA (I had the
same problem on a SiS chipset).
Couple of options:
a) live with it, it`s a pain in the ass, but that`s what happens with USB
modems for a lot of people. Not all modems seem to have that effect, but
unless you replace the modem for a different model...
b) try a powered USB hub - it doesn`t solve the problem for everyone, but
a few people have reported success (the USB hub will come with a seperate
power supply)
c) take the plunge and buy a router / modem. They don`t take any
processing power from the PC to do their thing, don`t force you to reboot
the PC when the connection drops, and provide security against hackers.

Many thanks for the replies. It is a 330 (I should have said).
I'll either get a router or leave the bugger on all day - that'll learn 'em
)
Si - off to look for a new driver too, now that the download won't be as
painful an experience as it used to be.

I`m not sure what version of the drivers you`ve got, but i`ve got the
Speedtouch 330 drivers on ftp:
phoenixbbs.ath.cx port 21
Login: speedtouch
Pword: drivers
Go for PPPoA_0-38_VCMUX.zip and the 2012 update (the CD directory
contains the drivers I got with the modem originally)
Of course, if you already have newer ones, forget that :-}

PS: ignore the ftp server name - it was done to "scare off" lamers
looking for open servers. I`m not a bible basher - completely the
opposite in fact :-p
