- Norton Personal firewall v Zonealarm
- Posted by malkz on September 10th, 2003
i got norton personal firewall free with systemworks 2003.
havn't installed it yet cos zonealarm along with the firewall in the
Draytek router seems to give an invisible result at "shields up" type
sites,,
Should i bin it or does it do anything else i might need/want?

you. I had protectx but after getting system works/firewall I
ran firewall for a while and junked protectx.
I tried Zonealarm once, drove me crazy.

With any luck your router should stop all the port scans anyway unless
you specifically open ports up - but ZoneAlarm will still stop stuff
getting "out" without your knowledge.
If it`s working for you, i`d leave it as it is :-)

I can use the other machines on my LAN quite happily with the old 2.x
version of ZA, but I hit upon a problem recently that I hadn`t had before
where it lost my "local" network settings and I had to re-enable them as
trusted. Until I did this one machine could see the other, but the other
couldn`t - if you know what I mean.
Try having a poke around and just check that the local zone is in the
trusted zone - if you`re getting your IP via DHCP you may need to try to
add a range as being trusted (not sure how you do that) - I set my router
up to allocate a specific IP address according to the mac address of my
network cards, so I always know which machine has what IP.

Kraftee Writes
I've been using Norton IS for two weeks now, (It came with my latest
motherboard) and I rather like it. I also put it on a networked laptop
coz
it was a lot simpler to configure the LAN than PC-Cillin that we used
before.
What changes have you made to its setup? (I am still on a dial-up btw)
