What we should all do is forward his abusive post to abuse@clara.net
I have been doing that to him, eventually, if enough of us cannot stand his
abusive and vulgar behaviour and Clara Net gets enough complaint about him,
they will check him.

Like explained in another post, I guess it all depends on quality and number
of users at the same time. My office 8MB is slower than my friend's home
512k adsl. Maybe in my area, I am the first to have ntl broadband? Pardon me
if I am wrong, I am new to broadband.

It is all relative really. But I must say, that abusive and vulgar
individual should be checked. There are young children besides us adults who
view this newsgroup.

I think the reason that he plays the 'children' argument is by the
fact that he is obviously speaking to one. You are clearly a 10 year
old child who has trawled this ng and found some big words to use to
make it look like you know something about the subject (which judging
by your previous posts you don't) and by dropping in a few naughty
words that your mummy and daddy wouldn't approve of, you think it is
big and clever or both. It's not, so go back to bed and read your
little bedtime stories and leave this ng to adults.

Yes, very sensible. I hope you enjoyed playing with yourself, its the
only pleasure you're likely to get.

Oh, by the way, talking of TOS abuse, you're in breach of Claranet's
AUP. Better report yourself quick, before someone else does it for
you. I'll leave it for you to work out which part you're breaking.

Are you sure its not just a silly where the NTL box has installed itself
a new virtual com port as COM3 - hence displacing or hiding the modems
com port?

If so you may find removing the modem in device manager, and then doing
a scan for hardware changes will cause it to be remounted on a new port.

Not entirely sure I want to step into this discussion with all these

But might as well :-)

I have no experience of the posters setup and so can't comment on the
specifics, but I have noticed that in many cases people will make a
subjective assessment of the "feel" of their internet links performance
by their web browsing experience.

As a result factors other than raw throughput come into consideration,
like link latency, or the rendering speed of the local computer etc.

This is why for many web browsing tasks, a 56K modem can "feel" as fast
as a broadband satellite connection, even though a large file transfer
will confirm the satellite to be much faster than with the modem.

Perhaps the latency and consistency of the cable connection out perform
those normally achieved on ADSL at the same address?

Perhaps the comparison was made with a associates (much slower) PC
running with 512K ADSL hence causing web page updates to appear slower?

Then again perhaps he will tell us ;-)

No flames please - just suggesting a rational hypothesis!

Thanks John,

I think this must have happened, I got him to remove the modem and then let
Windows ME reinstall and now everything looks OK. I'm hoping to visit him
later next week so I'll be able to see exactly what happened.

Despite the furore as to what constitutes 'broadband' <G> to my mind it's
always on, doesn't tie up a phone line and is still measurably faster than a
56K modem. So for a non power user who just wants a reasonable browsing
speed it *seems* like a good deal.

There, not an expletive in sight!

Best wishes

Barry
