- NTL Broadband
- Posted by premcomp@hotmail.com on September 18th, 2005
Hi all,
I am currently with Freedom 2 Surf, but I was sent some material from
NTL offering its 1Mb broadband service and free calls service for
£24.99, and was considering switching.
Could someone who uses the service please comment on the broadband
service and how reliable it is ?
Any opinions appreciated.
Thanks
GW

isn't all it should be.

I'd agree with Michael, been with thme (on cable) for over 2 yrs, no
problems. Ringing customer support is another matter though ;-)

We've been on NTL Freedom 512 for about a year. Never had a problem.
Never had to call customer service. Never had anything less than a great
connection and great speeds.
The only reason I have considered changing is because I want a 1 or 2
meg connection, but as NTLF are, apparently, going to 1 meg that's just
another reason to stay with them.

I have been with NTL over 4 years and my connection speed is 3Mb. No major
problems so far. Great speed and reliability is commonplace. You are far
better off with a cable modem as the speeds are constant. I find with ADSL
modems the speed fluctuates a lot.
Ringing Customer Services is another thing all together though. Don't get
tied in to Bulldog and UKonline etc..

I was with NTL for years. Had problems with the c/service and telephone but
the broadband was excellent. I'm with Plusnet now but only coz NTL is not
available where I live.

I would totally recommend them, certainly a good deal at the moment; you
could even go for 1mb broadband which is currently £9.99 for 12 months.
Under £120 a year for broadband is good going.
Have a look about, there's perhaps some caps being introduced, but currently
if you're a normal user (ie: download the odd thing, even everyday, but
don't take the piss ie: downloading large files 24/7) then you'll be fine.

NTL IMHO are the best 3mb, soon to be upgraded to 10mb by the end of this
year, flawless service, not on ounce of downtime since connection, great cs,
just my opinion others may disagree of course.

I have been an NTL cable customer since 2001. Frequent, intermittent
disconnection problems have finally driven me to look for an
alternative.
Despite being convinced that my problems were being caused by NTL's
broken network I still had to waste a days leave so I could sit in for
an engineer to come and tell me that my signal levels were fine. Half an
hour after he shrugged his shoulders and walked off my connection
dropped again.
I can't bear wasting more time on fruitless calls to customer services.
My next call to NTL will be to cancel my remaining services once ADSL is
up and running.

Lucky. When it works, it's OK. When it doesn't..... well, hopefully
you'll have the spare hours to spend 'on hold' waiting for customer
support, and hopefully you'll have (some else's) dial-up as backup. I've
had weeks (literally) of down-time before now.
BTW, check any caps carefully if you do decide to take them on; the 1M
is pretty limited.

about six months ago, when I switched to Demon ADSL. The NTL connection
was pretty reliable, but the speeds were quite erratic, and occasionally
download speeds were no better than dial-up. I have been much more
satisfied with Demon; in fact, I've not had any problems whatsoever.
For new customers, the beauty of NTL is that installation is free and
ethernet connectivity comes as standard. However, as you're already on
ADSL, if you want to save a few pounds, I would look at migrating to
another ADSL provider rather than NTL as there is lots more choice. It
is worth pointing out that most of the all inclusive packages of NTL are
only for the first year.

In fairness to other users that have experienced problems, one has to expect
that a company will have complaints, all part of a business really, NTL do
have a lot in certain regions, but in most parts of the country the
infrastructure and provisioning is good.
It's worth a go considering it's so cheap now...

company, ntl are singularly abysmal at communications. Net went down at
midnight last night - rang status line and found there was planned work
(still in progress until 5 hours after it was supposed to end; a mere
100% timing estimate error). Now would it be *so* unreasonable to email
in advance people who'd be affected? Or even put it on an accessible
web page? Maybe the users could then do some advance planning too.

Beware they will install the broadband and then say they will install the
telephone later as they are all booked up at the moment (excuses etc)
Anyway I ended up with just the broadband and no free telephone
("we'll call you back....").
rental. SO just be awae you re dealing with dishonest crooks.
Also you will have a restricted yse conection download limit of course.

Shouldn't you be answering customers calls rather then posting on the
new trying to butter your company up?
