[NTL] BroadBand Availability
Posted by Laurent Makowski on July 28th, 2004

Hi,

first of all, I would like to apologize for my bad english. I'm French
and will try to be understood as i can ;-).

Here is my situation.
I have a NTL box, witch provides me with Digital TV. I also registered
to NTL phone access (so I dont have BT Phone number), and a RTC
unlimited lowspeed Internet acces.

NTL website tells me I can not have broadband where I live (SW,
Vauxhall) and once I called them and the girl told me the same, without
explanation (she may have looked on their website as I did).

What do you think about it ? (cause my coworkers tell me that if i have
this box and digital tv there is no reason i can't have brodband).

Thank you.

I just called NTL.
A guy told me it was ok and recently available... ouf ...
But then I asked somme questions about modem etc, and he had to check
with his collegues ... when he came back, he told me "I'm sorry I was
wrong, it is not available in your area".

NB: I forgot to tell you but the "interactive services" on TV don't work.

If you have NTL digital TV, you should be able to get NTL broadband, as
I think the signal travels down the same cable.

Are you Wembley by any chance?

Ok so if I understand well, I have to subscribe to another ISP, but they
all ask me for my BT phone number to check availability.
But I don't have any BT phone number cause I am on NTL ... what a mess.

If you have ntl digital tv you should be able to have broadband cable
internet. I'm not a subscriber to NTL nor know alot about the company and
techonology. If you live in an analogue area you won't be able to have
broadband. I was under the impression all the analogue network had been
converted to digital?

You can still convert you NTL phoneline to BT. Then subscribe to an ADSL
service. Cheaper and more varied choice of suppliers.

When I had a NTL phone line installed, I was advised to take the
analogue TV service, as a freebie for a few months, then cancel it, as
then it could easily be changed to digital. I never took the digital
service, canceled the analogue TV service, and phone, but still got
broadband from NTL.

If Laurent is cabled up for NTL digital, I can't see why he has been
told that he can't have broadband, I always thought that it was the
non-cabling of areas that was the limiting factor.

NTL will tell you anything, depending on which way the wind is blowing at
the time :-)

Has the OP tried putting their postcode in the relevant box on the ntlworld
website?

I can give you an email address or phone no. to contact for stand-alone
cable modem which will probably get you a better answer than just ringing
their published phone no., but (as with all things NTL) no guarentees :-(

I'm from Peterborough and have NTL Digital TV and Phone service. I also
have NTL broadband. As asked in one of the replys if your postcode is SE11
which is Vauxhall in South London then according to
http://www.home.ntl.com/icat/home you can have Broadband. If I was you I
would ring up NTL again and say that there website does say you can have
Broadband..

Well, thank you everybody for your answers.
I just received an email from NTL:

-------

Dear Mr Laurent,

Thank you for your e mail regarding Broadband availability.

It is with regret that I inform you that this service is still not available
in your postcode. As you may be aware, you live in the ex-Videotron area of
London which is the oldest cabled area. Major construction work is necessary
to upgrade the cabling network to support this service. This work would
involve digging up most of the busiest highways of London. We do not
currently have a date, even an estimation, of when this will be available.

Please be aware that all of our services are subject to availability.

I am sorry that my response cannot be a more favourable one.

Kind Regards,
Joanne

So I've just called BT, asked for the cheapest phone line.
Next friday a guy will install everything necessary and then I subscribe
online for BT broadband. (NTL ha s just lost a possible broadband customer)

Well to be fair it's not as if they're refusing your custom, more it's
impossible to have you as a broadband customer due to infrastructure
constraints which are impractical to resolve.

Good luck with BT though
