OK I have been trying to set the following up.

Don't ask why I have ended up with a wireless ADSL router... I am
installing this for a friend and they thought that they had ADSL...
Go round there and to find a cable modem when we have ordered an adsl
kit.

He has a NTL cable modem with a rj45 and usb connection.

I need to now use the DG834G Wireless router with the cable modem.

I need a clear explanation of how to do this ?

I guess the cable modem recieves a dynamic IP from the ISP. I think
this must be an internet valid ip (but not too sure with out NTL
friends)

Anyone able to point me in the right direction with this ?

How will the wireless router connect to the ADSL modem (Will I need a
cross-over cable?)

Don't mess around with the ADSL router, send it back and buy a cable modem
router with wireless.

There is just a ADSL line input on the Netgear for the WAN side and it then
routes traffic to/from the LAN ports and Wireless network. If you connect
the cable modem RJ45 to one of the LAN ports on the Netgear it won't go via
the Netgear router/firewall.

You need a cable modem router, this has a RJ45 WAN port instead of the ADSL
line input. With the cable modem connected to this WAN port traffic will go
via the router firewall to the LAN and Wireless network.

It should be possible to configure the router to use another ethernet
port as the Internet access point. That's exactly what I am intending
to do - I bought the ADSL router in anticipation of getting ADSL
service <don't ask!>.

If there is anyone here that has done this please chip in and tell us
about it.

What I need to know is once the NTL modem is set up, is the RJ45
connecttor just a LAN access to the IInternet or does it require
special sw in the PC before it will work. I'm trying to configure this
remotely (telling someone else what to do) and it is going to be
challenging!

Those instructions are about using the wireless side of the router as a
wireless access point. You can't use the router functions in that
scenario - note that the diagram is shown with the WAN connection
disconnected on the blue device, which in your case would be your
DG834G.

You are going to need a different router.


No software needed - other than a DHCP client to receive the ntl:
allocated IP address. All routers with an Ethernet WAN port have such a
feature.

It's best to go through the configuration (if ntl: didn't do it for you)
using a direct connection to a PC - then power down the cable modem and
connect the router.

What I had not understood, and what I think your answer implies, is
that the WAN port on a router is different from the rest of the ports
and if (as in this case) the WAN port is dedicated to ADSL then none of
the other ports can be configured as WAN ports.

Thus the DG834G will pass though to another LAN or other ethernet
connection but not support a WAN connection. Is my interpretation
correct?
