- NTL modem alternatives???
- Posted by Sil-Mon Li on October 2nd, 2003
Hi,
I just wanted to know if the Linksys Wireless Access Point Router with
4-Port (BEFW11S4) is a good alternative for the cable modem that NTL
give you.
Also could you tell me whether it is an easy thing to install? Will
there be settings that I will have to configure on the Wireless
Router? Could anyone post a step by step guide?
Just wondering whether this router is an "always on" internet
connection or will a computer have to be on permanently also?
Regards,
Sil

You *HAVE* to use the cable modem that ntl: give you - there is no alternative.
Thi modem has both USB and Ethernet sockets so you can connect it to a router
(wireless or otherwise).

You can plug it directly into a suitable router - can't use a hub off the
modem though.

ntl used to say you could connect to a hub - this now only applies to those who
use a console and a PC AFAIAA.
Otherwise use a router such as the £80 (in PC World) 4 port + WLAN Belkin
F5D6231. If you use the wireless you will need a suitable wireless PCI or USB
Ethernet adaptor .
