- NTL/Virgin phone line for broadband
- Posted by b8pu on March 23rd, 2007
I currently have 3 services from Virgin (NTL): broadband, phone and
tv. I am fed up with their customer service so would like to cancel
the phone and tv and only keep the broadband and buy Freeview (I would
cancel the broadband too but I don't want to have to pay for a BT
phone line for ADSL).
Question is, do I NEED to have a phone line to be able to get the
broadband through Virgin? Can I get away with having the broadband
only? I hardly use the phone and am happy to start using my mobile
more instead.

They delivery their internet access via cable, not via ADSL, so no telephone
line is required.

If it is ntl cable broadband then its not a problem. When I left NTl I did
so in stages. I cancelled the phone and TV getting a bt line and freeview.
Then when I was ready to transfer to Adsl I cancelled the ntl cable
broadband.
NB thye did mess up the billing at every stage.... but that's not unusual

I also should double-check, I don't need a phone line for freeview do
I? So I can do with freeview and cable broadband with no phone line?

No phone line needed for freeview.
I`ve now done away with Telephone and Tv from Virgin, just have broadband
and a Voip adaptor/Router.
Works lovely (Draytek 2100VG), really impressed, no line rental, no call
connection charge and low call charges (Virgin take Note)..
Now to find someone at Virgin who can sort my final bill :s What a cock
up......

No.
The phone line is required for Sky for 'Interactive Discount' purposes for the
first 12 months of a new subsidised installation, and also for verifying that
two sky boxes in a 'multiroom' subscription are at the same address. For normal
Sky operation after 12 months, there is no telephone line required, unless you
want to use interactive services.
Freeview has no such features built in as standard (there is interactive
content, but it is not the same platform as sky and does not have a requirement
for a telephone connection at all, either in the hardware, nor in the user's
contract (such that it is, there is no contract, other than TV Licensing))

Its funny with NTL, when I was with them (left about 6 months ago) and
upgraded my service, the billing was fine and my bill would go up in line
with the additional services I had. However downgrade your service, thats
when they had "billing problems" i.e. when reducing your bill. I dont think
it is NTL being useless, I think its designed like this. If only 0.5% of
people dont catch the mistake, thats a lot of money for NTL. I find it
difficult to believe when it comes to increasing your bill, they have no
problems and are on the ball, but when it comes to reducing your bill all of
a sudden they have problems.
Never heard of an NTL/Virgin customer complain that NTL/Virgin has not
charged them enough...but have heard or and experienced myself being over
charged.

Same here. I have had enough of them messing around with my bills. A
while back they offered me £24 a month for the 3 services which I
thought was pretty good. They managed to bill me that for a few
months, and then start charging me a lot more. I have phoned several
times to complain and each time they deny all knowledge of the
previous offer (even though they can see it in my billing history) and
then offer me a new deal which never gets applied...

You can cancel anything you like, it won't stop them billing you for the
service.
