- NTL Wireless Broadband Setup
- Posted by TheScullster on August 16th, 2007
Hi all
Please bear with me I'm a wireless virgin!
A colleague of mine cannot connect to his home network.
This is a wireless setup with a Linksys router - is there such a thing as a
"standard" NTL wireless install?
Anyway, he was working away from home and someone changed some settings on
his laptop to get him onto their wireless network (some hotel I think!).
My question is, what are they likely to have changed?
I am guessing that they may have put some static ip addresses into his
wireless connection properties - does this sound likely?
Will the Linksys router installed by NTL be acting as a DHCP server?
If so is it likely that changing the ip settings to "obtain automatically"
will resolve the situation?
Unfortunately he does not live locally, so troubleshooting will have to be
done remotely
Any suggestions gratefully received
Phil

phil@dropthespam.com declared for all the world to hear...
If he's using the windows XP built-in stuff then no changes are
necessary, if he's not and he's using some proprietary 3rd party
"connection manager" type stuff then things which are likely to have
changed will be the SSID and also encryption will be off.
For a hotel? No chance. They will use DHCP without a doubt.
There will be a DHCP server somewhere on the home network, usually it's
the router that does this.
Quite possibly.

Don't get involved let your friend find somebody who is more local who
can help.
If you don't know how, just how will you be able to help someone who
knows even less. It's hard enough trying to give remote help when you
do know what you're talking about, it get's multitudes worse when you
are both in the dark & don't know where the light switch is.
Sorry to be blunt, but I'm only trying to save you a lot of
frustration & agro. Now if you lived next to each other it could be a
joint learning experience.
