Copied from ADSL Guide.
BT has entered the IT support market by launching a service called "BT Home
IT Visit" targeted at home users. BT Broadband customers can arrange for an
engineer to visit their home and install a broadband service from £50 and
anyone with a BT line can use the Home IT Visit service for IT-related
problems for a fee of £75 for the first hour, and £25 per 30 minute
increment thereafter.
The company has been running trials for three months and now has a team of
up to 2,000 trained engineers who are providing this service. The service is
ideal for households wanting some help in setting up a wireless network,
moving data to a new computer, connecting new printers, etc. Engineers can
also carry out a 'health check' on your PC.

In other words you'd pay for your visit & they'll turn around & say
you ADSL is borked & walk out (can't get their pretty hands dirty can
they). Knew they had something up their sleeve, may go for it if it's
advertised but I'm afraid my face doesn't fit the corporate image (i.e
I haven't got a brown tongue or nose) so I doubt if I'll get the
post....

All the more reason why anyone new to the pc/internet world shoud try and
do their best to do a bit of self-teaching. To think you could be paying
around £75-£100 to have someone come to your house, set up a new printer
and give your pc a 'health check' seems extortionate. I also think the
health check translates as running a few basic scan/diagnostic tools on
your pc - which you can easily do by yourself. I think BT are being plain
greedy.

But keep an eye on the internal job news as I have heard whispers that
they are looking for extra 'engineers' but could you afford the
paycut?
Which centre do you work at, it wouldn't be Leicester or Coventry
would it, if so I'd better run & hide ;-)

You think?
When I was unemployed a couple of years ago I thought about charging for
similar 'health checks' as a way of supplementing my income (since I was
spending a lot of time doing free ones for friends!). But then I did some
sums. Sorting out a PC can easily take a whole day by the time you've
installed all the latest critical patches and rebooted the PC several times,
even if it's not already riddled with viruses. Ideally you would defrag the
disc and make a backup. Alternatively you could give them a loan PC and take
theirs away to fix but then you've got two trips and you still have to copy
all their data. I couldn't see any way to do it for less than the cost of a
new PC.
Also, the "self-teaching" option would only exist for perhaps 10% of the
population at most, in my experience. The other 90% who lack the ability or
confidence have a real problem - I have no idea how they cope.

I rather liked the deductions made to your basic pay for the Mobile Workers
Premium or whatever it's called. The one we were all forced onto and told that
it would benefit us by £££ every year. Odd thing is my buddy is on long term
sick and not entitled to it. His flat money has gone UP without it by £30 a
month. Bless BT, they rob their staff too. I like the simple things in BT life,
like how they pay a contractor £90 each to repaint their cabs green to cover the
grafetti, and then ask engineers NOT to order dexi-bond to keep water out of
joints because its £10 a shot. Then they insist that all joints have dexi-bond
fitted or it's an audit failure.
If you ever wondered what the muppets did after their TV show came off air I can
tell you, they went into management at BT.

Make a point of recording your apr interview with the LCM, either with a simple
hand held recorder, or do as I do, plug a small electret microphone into your
laptop and put it in the case. You can use media player to record the whole
thing without worry. If you are really adventurous you can even video them with
a tiny web cam ;-)
You have to treat L1, L2 & L3 with the respect they deserve. None. They would
happily shit on you, so make sure you have plenty of shit to drop on them too!
