I'd be interested in peoples recommendations for the best ADSL provider to
sign up with.

I'm about to move house, so will be leaving Pipex behind after 4 years -
although I can't fault them (I'm sure others can) I am not sure whether I
want Pipex at the new house, complete with new 12 month contract.

Basically - I can only get 1Mbps at my current house, but line checkers say
I should be able to get 4Mbps at the new house (same exchange, just 1 mile
nearer to it) so I assume a MAX product is what I need to consider?

I don't use P2P or torrents etc, but I download binaries from usenet - I
estimate about 20Gb a month, and mainly at peak times or overnight.

I use my own Wireless modem/router, so I'd prefer not to have to use
someone's dedicated equipment.

I don't need Newsgroups (already pay extra for that) but I do need at least
3 POP accounts, but don't need webspace.

Tiscali looked good on price, but I understand their Fair Use Policy
throttles anyone who downloads more than 1Gb at any peak time (which I could
easily do). Pipex Max looked good, but at £24.99 is over £2 more than I'm
paying at present. I'd go for Sky Broadband Mid (or Max), because it could
be £5-£10 a month but I have heard *nothing* good about the service, and I
don't necessarily want to use their router.

What else is there?

anyone have any experience of this?

I quite like the idea of their ADSL Max Allowance service at £19.99 with
30Gb of peak time and 300Gb of off-peak downloads a month - and that the
minimum contract period is just 1 month. Static IP is nice too.

The only downside, as they are resellers - it all looks a bit, well,
amateurish - no glossy website or bells and whistles, and one wonders if
that is representative of the service you might expect..? Or, worse case
scenario, the reseller, or the main company behind the connection, go bust -
as is not unknown of ISP's in this day and age..

You might find posts from Jason Clifford in alt.internet.providers.uk or
uk.net.providers (and as UKFSN on www.ADSLguide.org.uk where there is a
discussion area for EntaNet, I think).

EntaNet doesn't sell direct, but in most cases billing is handled direct
(with commission being passed on, and in the case of UKFSN that's then
passed on again to open source projects, I think). Hopefully, you'll
give them another look, and not be put off by first view of a site.
