Is it a piece of art or s***?

I want to buy a ADSL router/switch, but i want something realible and worth
the value. I saw the Origo modem on scan.co.uk. Sure it is cheap, but what
about the quality?

Thanks for your time

more Origo routers returned than any other hardware product that they
sell and recommended the D-Link 504 . I bought the 504 and this has
done nothing but drop my connection and reset itself to factory
default on average no less than once every 48 hrs since buying it
three weeks ago and is being returned to Scan in the morning ,I have
gone back to using my old ASUS router for the time being .

I think scan is "tricky"...

The same modem is selling on EBuyer under the name "EBuyer 4 Port ADSL Modem
Router" for 30.02 (35.28 inc VAT), But Scan is selling over 50!!!

I searched on the web too, and read the forum... seems users opions are all
about firmware and unfriendly setup... once you get it to work, it is
great...

i dont know.... but Netgear and D-Link their price are about 2.5 times
(conservative estimate) as much.... this is leave me a difficult choice....

buy new I am only fifteen minutes away from Scan by Moterway and they
do seem to have a take it or leave it approach but are the only real
stockist of computer hardware north of Manchester and the Lancs
cumbria boarder . Apart from tricky dicky's like PC World and the
other stores in the Dixon group .
D-Link at just over eighty pounds falls into that category take a look
at the quoted prices in the hardware reviews on the ADSLGUIDE site.
My 1port Asus was £ 150.00 two years ago when I bought it I think I am
going to be asking for a refund when I get to Scan with the D-Link and
sticking with my Asus and network hub more wires and equipment hanging
around I know which is the one thing about computers I have always
found hard to live with and the reason for buying the D-Link in the
first place .

I bought two Origo ASR 8400s.

One for home in July - came with V9 firmware and I had several
disconnect/reconnects for the first few hours after I plugged it in. I
upgraded to current v10 firmware as I'd researched before buying (and I was
online 5 days before my BT activation date, thanks Eclipse) so I didn't
really notice.

I bought another one in August for our cybercafe (ISP: Vispa) which came
flashed with the latest firmware.

Both are excellent, rock solid. Both are getting 465-470 kbps according to
ADSLguide speed test. A lot easier to manage than the Cisco 801 ISDN router
the cybercafe was using and totally stealthed using a DMZ to a non-existent
local IP.

Forums supported at UK distributor: very supportive - phone support, tested
replacements, lots of advice and help from members etc etc.

I was thinking of getting a Solwise 705 or 715 but couldn't think of a good
reason to pay double.

You can be unlucky with any router. Question is, if you happen to be unlucky
do you want to have spent £30, £70, £130 ...?

Highly recommended.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I set my mind on the Origo then. I
have wait for 10 days for the EBuyer to order one (they are selling it at
35), do u know anywhere similar price where I dont have to wait? I live in
London and I never trusted those shop on streets....

Thanks for your time.

I got my first from ebuyer (they had them in stock then)

I got the second from http://www.computer-component.com/ - in stock but
costs 39.50 and no credit cards taken (debit OK). This one seems to be
linked to the UK distributor which is probably the same as
http://www.qtds.com/

I believe http://www.scan.co.uk had them on special offer

I was over there earlier this afternoon and they refused to swap a
faulty D-Link router that I took back said it had to be returned to
D-Link but they did offer me a full re fund how bloody stupid. They
could have swaped it instead they gave me my money back so now I shall
by from another outlet sod Scan Computers .

You cannot force them to replace faulty goods if they choose to refund your
money instead.
