This morning I received a promotional email from MW's author, Nick
Bolton, advising that I could upgrade to MW Pro and use it freely in
place of MW Free. (I'm actually a registered, 'paid-up' customer of MW
Free 2.0 beta, but realised a while ago that that doesn't give me any
special privileges over an unregistered non paid up user!)

I immediately downloaded and installed the new MW Pro 4.1, only to
find that I cannot just pick up where I left off with
my existing account, filters, etc. That had been my interpretation of
the email, obviously a hasty and naive one. When I came to use the
Import facility, I discovered it doesn't handle Agent. (In fact, in
the Help, describing the manual setup of accounts, I could see no
reference to Agent at all.)

Has any Agent user here made the switch to any version of MW Pro? If
so, I'd appreciate advice on how to minimise the effort. Last thing I
want to do is re-enter hundreds of Friends and Blacklist names.

Mailwasher doesn`t integrate into your email client in the way I think
you`re trying to describe - its a standalone front-end that lets you
filter the crap without wasting time downloading it.

If you already had mailwasher filters, you should, AFAIK, be able to use
them straight away with MW Pro

I had the same problem as you when I upgraded to MW Pro. You will need to
copy your filters and friends/black list into the new program. The easiest
way is to do this from Windows. Please note that the following instructions
are for Windows XP & 2000. You will need administrative rights to alter some
of the view settings below. If your user name does not have administrative
rights login as the administrator.

All of the data is held in two files; blacklist.txt & filters.txt. You will
need to copy these files from one folder into another as Mail Washer & Mail
Washer Pro do not install themselves in the same location.

1) Make sure Mail Washer & Mail Washer Pro are both closed.
2) Open 'My Computer'.
3) On the menu select 'Tools > Folder Options'; select the 'View' tab.
4) In the advanced settings window select 'Show hidden files and folders'
and remove the tick next to 'Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)'. A warning message will pop-up; answer Yes and then click OK.
5) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data (where
USER NAME is your Windows login name).
6) In amongst all of the folders in there you will see one called MailWasher
and another called MailWasherPro. First look in the folder called
MailWasher.
7) You now need to select two files; Blacklist.txt & filters.txt. You will
need to copy both of these files (hold down ctrl, single click each of them
and then on the menu select 'Edit > Copy'). Blacklist.txt contains both your
friends and blacklist addresses and filters.txt contains your rules for
processing emails.
8) Go back to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data and then
go into the folder called MailWasherPro. On the menu select Edit > Paste.
You will be asked if you want to replace the files in this folder; click
'Yes' to paste the two files.
9) On the menu select 'Tool > Folder Options'. You are now going to reverse
the changes you made in step 4. Go to the 'View' tab and select 'Do not show
hidden files and folders' and put a tick in the box next to 'Hide protected
operating system files (Recommended)'. Click OK.
10) Close 'My Computer' and open Mail Washer Pro; all your old filters and
friends/blacklists should now be there.

Sorry if this is a little long winded but it was the only way I could find
to move the data from one program to the other. If you need anymore help
then feel free to ask via the newsgroup.
