- OT- Dell horror! Help or advice please!
- Posted by xCx on July 31st, 2007
Oh my word please can someone help me?
I've ordered a machine from dell, excellent bargain for £599.32
However, I've had my credit card bill and they've billed it
for £2014.81, I've called their head office and emailed them
and now they're asking for copies of statements, it's all
dealt with in India and I know they have no data protection
laws over there.
When I call their head office number with the number I get off
of saynoto0870 they just keep putting me back through to India
all the time, these Indians don't even seem to be able to
grasp what I'm saying and I really am not difficult to
understand, I'm a customer service manager myself and can
understand how horrified a customer would be if this happened,
but they just don't seem to care or understand.
They keep asking me to scan the statement in, something which
I can't do because I don't have a scanner, and they're asking
me to fax it accross to them!
Does anyone have a number of someone in England that I can
speak to regarding this? I'm sure that what they have done is
committed fraud. I have already called my credit card company
who have put the amount on as a disputed amount and are
sending me out a form to sign, I've been messing about with
them for over 3 hours this morning now.
I'll never ever use them again, the machine was ordered on
11th July and it's still in pre production due to lack of
parts caused by a glass shortage.
Thanks in advance guys

They will probably tell you to phone Dell. This is why you need to
*insist*.
Then wait for Dell to contact you ...
You could also write to their Registered Office, 25/28 North Wall Quay,
Dublin 1.

Put everything in writing, don't waste your time on the phone.
Should have done a little research on Dell before, as you should with
any purchase, see if there have been complaints about the company. The
net is rife with DELL COMPLAINTS!

To be fair, they do have a fair few customers. As a percentage I don't
think there are *that* many more complaints about Dell than anyone
else. Admittedly, some of their stuff is shite and their customer
services are at times crap, but then so are most big companies.

Actually, Dell is based in Ireland. Put the 0870 numbers into
www.saynoto0870.com for the Irish geographic equivalents (I found it far
cheaper to call Ireland direct on my VoIP line than calling the 0870
number..!)

Well, I agree with most of what's being said - almost all big organizations
will have some problems but percentage-wise, no more than any other. The one
gripe I have about Dell is that they use non-standard parts, so you have to
buy spares from them at vastly inflated prices, as a friend of mine has just
found out.
When he asked me to have a look at his machine I discovered that it was the
PSU that had gone faulty but because it was a weird shape, he couldn't get a
generic one for about 20-quid from the local computer shop, but instead had
to pay about 65-quid (IIRC) for the specific one from Dell.

be a Dell machine in there too. Call me a cynic but you may find that
someone who buys 500 machines gets slightly better service than someone
who buys one. Ask about SX270, GX280 and similar if you want reliability
stories.

Cheers Ivor, I've saved some money ringing the Ireland number
instead of the 0870, there's a lot of Indians in Ireland
though! All the calls just divert over to India
I've called the credit card company and the amount has been
put into dispute, they're sending me a statement to sign and
send back, dell have said that they're looking into it, for
such a high tech company they're very slow in responding.
I'm waiting for Jalala Maralala (I think that's what she's
called) to ring me back, here's hoping!

My experience of Dell: Ordered a PC for a friend and was quoted a delivery
for about 8 days time. I emailed them to ask for a more specific date and
they replied saying that they would do everything possible to bring the date
forward. They then let me know that the delivery was brought forward by 3
days, and one of their support persons (coincidentally an Indian sounding
name) would phone after delivery. He did phone, and then said he'd call back
the next day to see if everything was ok and if I needed more support.
Again, he did phone back.
This level of support from such a large company struck me as extraordinary.
Of course, everything went smoothly so I have no experience of what happens
when there are hiccups.
I hope you have the same experience.

Just like Sony.
Try to get bits for a Vaio computer and you'll be unsuccessful.
Their stock reply is - send it to us and we'll repair it.
No quote, estimate or anything given - and they will not supply replacement
parts, even when out of warranty.
When mine went tits-up, my computer-savvy son obtained some "almost the
same" - but better quality! - parts and fixed it for much less than Sony
would have charged me.

Whereas, when I soaked my Sony camcorder in salt water, I phoned Sony and
chatted with a very helpful bloke in their spare dept who shipped out the
parts the same day.

Yes, three different motherboards.
One with Matsushita capacitors, One with Samsung capacitors.
One with some cheap generic capacitors.
That ran hot.
And burst.
Under the processor, normally.
Most UK sales had the latter, and lasted less than 400 operating hours.
Dell have officially denied there is an issue, so it must be true.

Hmm, well I'm pretty certain the guy I spoke to when I ordered my laptop

Of course I suppose he *could* have been working in India...!

their computers, if it's not registered with them they won't even talk
to you, they won't sell spares for Vaio, even to authorised repair
centres it just has to go back to them. If you want to send it to them,
you have to give them a credit card number before they'll issue an RMA.
