OT: Domain name for sale/transfer - ADSL related
Posted by Andy Pandy on September 22nd, 2004

A long shot but I don't suppose anyone wants to buy a domain name I
currently have registered?

Its "newbridgeadsl.co.uk"

I had it registered to setup a campaign web site before my exchange area had
ADSL. This has now happened and I don't really need this anymore.

If nobody is interested it will get cancelled, surrendered.

Suppose its only useful for someone having a connection with ADSL and either
living near another "newbridge" in the UK or having a company called
"newbridge" ;-)

To transfer it, nominet want to charge £30 + VAT so this would have to be
part of the sale!

Thanks for looking anyway
Andy

Ahem! Sorry, forget to mention about the fact that its going to expire on 7
Nov 2004 and a further two years registration for example is going to cost
another £60 + VAT...

What ? how much ?

You can get .co.uk domains for a little over 6 quid inc. VAT for two
years.

Keep it and trasnfer to a different registrar, easily.co.uk,
123reg.co.uk etc

123-reg has a transfer-in fee. However, even with a 4.99 fee and the
renewal it would be a lot less than 60 quid (huh... + VAT ouch!!) PGM

Presumably you've had a letter via snail mail from those rip off thieves called DRM
(Domian registration M-- something or other).

The thing to do with their letter is to shred it, and then send them an abusive
messaage in their reply envelope, but without the stamp.

The 60 quid plus VAT is a rip off scam. The real domain reg will email you a couple
of weeks before renewal and ask for a renewal fee that will be around the 15 quid
mark.

These DRM arseholes are simply scamming thieves.

The extra 1 GBP off the 60 + VAT price is significant, *how* ? :-)

I personally would avoid oneandone.co.uk if that's the firm which is
offering the sub-5 quid price... If you look at the extras offered in
the extra pound or so (for a new domain, not transfer), at 123-reg.co.uk
you might be surprised at what they supply over the features from 1and1.

Avoid them? Could you elaborate? I can see no 'extras offered' by
123-reg that are not also offered free with 1and1.

Thanks for all the advice. Yep, I did get a letter from some place in
Cambridge "Domain Registry Services" - I got the domain from oneandone.co.uk
originally.

Interestingly enough I did check nominet.com (I think that was it) and they
mentioned about transferring, cancelling etc. but no idea of costs.

Not sure what you meant by waiting for "the real domain reg" - I thought
that was domain registry services?

The "Domain Registry Services" are simply scammers trying to rip you off. They have
no authority but are simply a bunch of scammers that check when your domain is coming
up to expiry and then send you an "official" sounding letter telling you to send them
a large cheque. They renew you domain "on your behalf" for the £10 - £15 that it
really costs and pocket the difference.

By the "real domain reg" I mean the people with whom you originally registered your
domain. When it is due for renewal they will email you and invite you to renew, at
the normal £10 - £15 price.

These "Domain Registry Services" type concerns are just trying to rip you off.

In fact I'd go as far as to say they are a bunch of criminals, liars, thieves and con
men. Don't get involved with them.

you mean the 5 quid it costs (actually, they could be nasty and use
1and1 which is charging less than it costs them, though they would be
even further away from Nominet's sanctions in so doing - the 5 quid is
a fee payable to Nominet by tagholding members, which have paid a setup
and annual fee to Nominet for the discounted costs on domain fees...

You can have some fun with them, like getting them to ring a personal
number one of my 070xxx numbers is just under 40p/min from a landline
and probably 50p/min from a mobile, so when one of my clients had the
phone call about 'you can register the .com domain for 100 pounds' he
asked them to send the IT man an SMS (hint, it got them to use a mob,
but you cannot text an 070xx number) with their contact details and a
note of the domain name. They were one of the firms claiming that a
company had asked to register <similar name to existing domain> which
they felt my client might be justified in registering instead of this
'other party' (which doesn't exist, of course, just an incentive that
some will fall for, not to have a rival take a similar domain name!).

I enjoyed chatting about the weather and all sorts of things with the
lady while I registered the domain for my client at lower cost, and I
was then able to say that I thought there was some possibility it had
'already been taken' so can they please check again while I hold on ?
I guess the few people conned into paying their stiff fees more than
cover the many fruitless calls, but stinging them for a fiver or so
was a little hit back at one such firm. I have warned a number of
other clients and dished out several different 070xxx numbers for
them to use, to the con artists won't spot the same number again
for a while :-) Peter M

It has been a while since I looked at the 1and1 site, and they've made a
lot of changes since January, from what I can see. They do now provide
nameserver changes (but they seem very slow to push the details to
Nominet, compared with some other services) but don't offer a simple
way to change IPSTAG (to transfer the domain away). They seem to be
much more open about showing the various contact details, which all
other registration firms could copy, to be honest (a point in favour
of 1and1, to be seeing the fields hidden from users even by Nominet!)

(Just checked and even 12 hours on, the request to change nameservers
from the default Schlund entries is not showing within the 1and1 DNS
check so heaven knows when it will get to Nominet and work properly!)

IMO the 1and1 control panel (compared with 123-reg.co.uk)

o has better control over admin/tech/billing/registrant contacts

o lacks DNS control to allow user changes to A and MX recs
(user can now change nameservers, difficult a year ago)

o has limited mail forwarding (123-reg has mail bounce etc)

o lacks free site submission to search engines

o lacks a simple way to change IPSTAG - move/cancel a domain is
made more awkward than any other registration firm I've used.

Finally 1and1 fails to give advanced notification of impending renewals
(their policy is renew first, invoice a month later - oh, and renewals
might not match the current 1.99 pricing... mine was 6.79 inc VAT).

Sorry unclear! I cancelled as soon as they sent the e-mail last month
that they would be charging for the renewals etc. Had to ask them how -
you have to log into a different place on the site and cancel the
domains/contracts. Then fax/post the confirmation. Also set several
others to lapse when they expire later on, problem with cheap domains is
they get bought on a whim but forgotten well before renewal date .
