OT: Are Freeserve's POP servers on the blink?
Posted by Roger Mills on June 23rd, 2006

I would post this in the appropriate forum hosted by
Freeserve/Wannado/Orange (or whatever they're called today) except that you
have to be physically logged on to one of their accounts to do so - and I
ain't - so hopefully somebody here will be able to throw some light on the
subject.

I have retained several Freeserve email accounts on a PAYG basis even though
my broadband connection is now via PlusNet.

I monitor all my email accounts in MailWasher in order to get rid of spam at
source. Quite often, an email addressed to one of the Freeserve accounts
will appear in MailWasher, but when I go to access it in Outlook it ain't
there! Similarly, if I mark it as spam and tell MailWasher to delete it,
chances are that it can't find it on the server.

For quite some weeks, I've noticed emails appear and disappear several
times - and unless I actually read them while their heads are above the
parapet, they're likely to disappear again.

Has anyone else experienced this - and can anyone shed any light on what is
likely to be causing it?

Are Freeserve (and their successors) trying to tell me something because
they no longer make any money out of me?

Roger

does your news server carry the group wanadoouk.help.misc? That group
is active (not on google groups), and the problem has been discussed
there recently. I'm not sure what the solution was, but it appears to
be Mailwasher-related.

I'm no longer with Freeserve, but still have an fsnet.co.uk account.
I don't use Mailwasher and haven't had trouble POP-ing mail on a daily
basis from my old account.

No. As long as you dial in every few months, or retrieve a lapsed
account from the website, you're fine.
