- OT : MSN Messenger webcam port
- Posted by tx2 on February 18th, 2006
My offspring insists on using webcam with MSN Messenger, and despite my
protests to the contrary, carries on doing so whilst I am gaming,
causing me untold 'ping' problems!
I don't want to ban the internet lock, stock and two smoking barrels,
just the webcam bit of MSN.
We are running through a 'Notgreat' DG834G router that I think can be
configured on certain ports via the firewall to ban such...........
anyone care to enlighten me as to which ports I need to close to a)
allow MSN per se, but b) stop the webcam?
TIA

So you maliciously hijack their "video chats" just so you can be
selfish and play games :-p
Kick their arses !

Yup, 11 and 13, and they can circumvent almost any software 'lock' I put
on the computer. If they don't have a webcam, they can't use a webcam.
I've found a physical deterrent works far better than a software one,
especially where teenagers are concerned.

Webcams cost 10-30 quid.
They are not hard to obtain.

Who's the parent in your house, anyway? No way you should allow your
kids to use a webcam.

5004 - 65535 udp sendreceive To use audio/video features you have to open up a
range within the one that is give here.
5190 udp inbound
Unless you run a server you could fwd all ports 5004 to 65535 to an invalid IP..
127.0.0.5 for example.
