OT: Site test please?
Posted by Terry Pinnell on February 2nd, 2006

Trying this link (suggested as possible source of a replacement for my
apparently failed Shockwave Player)

http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/d.../download.cgi?

I repeatedly get "Unable to connect; Firefox can't establish a
connection to the server at sdc.shockwave.com."

Same this morning as last night.

Anyone else get similar problem please?

Thanks all. Strange I can't get to that site...

I can reach that alternative, thank you. However, nothing appears to
be happening. I see this:

"When you see Installation Complete above, your installation is
successful. The installation should take about 6 minutes on a 56K
modem."

There's no hour glass, but in the status line I see
"Connecting to download.macromedia.com..."
Yet, after maybe 6-8 mins, nothing has changed.

But where?! I can't get anything but the familiar large error message.
And 'Open this page in IE' (a Firefox extension) gets same result. Can
you reach that page OK please?

Terry, sorry if you already said, but what ISP are you using? Try using a
proxy server and see how that goes. It works here most times.

Thanks John. I'm afraid that although an experienced PC end user,
Networking remains largely a black art to me. Without very specific
step-by-step instructions, I'm not sure how I would set up a 'proxy
server'. And I'd fret that I'd be thereby introducing some negative
side effect.

However, you're definitely onto something here. From help elsewhere,
I've found that the 'resolved' version of that URL *does* work OK. So
the issue becomes that of finding why the normal ('unresolved') one
doesn't.

I had a clue to this earlier. I have a wireless LAN ('Prestige 600
Series') on my XP Home PC, installed by my son, and to be frank I know
very little about how it works. It just delivers my broadband internet
services reliably, and I rarely have cause to look at anything to do
with it. But I was wondering if some aspect of its configuration could
be causing this access problem to
http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/d...d/download.cgi

So, via Control Panel|Networking, I opened the Local Area Connection
Status window and clicked Repair. To my surprise, that gave this
message:
Repair Connection
"The following steps of the repair operation failed:
Purging the DNS Resolver cache.
Please contact your network administrator or ISP."

It's now clear that it *does* have a connection. But how to fix the
underlying problem? Any ideas anyone please?

FWIW, I'm a BT Broadband user.
