OT: telephoning 1-800 numbers in the US
Posted by Bob Wibble on July 25th, 2007

Apologies for the off-topic question, but I know there are some wise heads
in here...

Can I phone a 1-800 number in the US for free from a BT land line here in
the UK, or do I have to pay the call charges? I know that 0800 numbers here
in the UK usually don't work for people phoning in from abroad, and I
wondered if this was the case in the other direction.

Thanks.

Bob

You can't avoid paying AIUI. You can dial the 1-800 number but the fact you're
phoning from the UK will be detected. In such cases you should get a recorded
message that tells you you're being charged. That's my experience anyway.

You'll pay regular rates.

You could use VoIP , though some do charge.

What a shame. Ah well.

Thanks to both for their replies.

Not so sure about from a BT line, but since you're using a computer,
why not utilise it to get the free calls via that ?

Not sure about now but I have used Skypeout to successfully call Canada
1-800 numbers. Does confuse the operators tho!

Not to US freephone numbers, only UK ones. Free World Dialup allows free
calls to 1-800 numbers though. You need to prefix the number with a * or
it won't connect, but you get an announcement to that effect if you get it
wrong.

Using any sip client, you can place a call to
sip:18005558355@tf.voipmich.com (where "5558355" is the toll free number
you with to call).

I recently had to do exactly that. Before the call was connected a taped
message informed me that if the call proceeded I would be liable for the
international part of the cost. In the event I use TalkTalk's free evening
and weekend deal that includes the US and that covered the 1-800 call so I
did in fact get it free. Without that service I would have been charged.
