- OT : unable to access www.chaossoftware.com
- Posted by ComPCs on October 19th, 2005
I seem unable to get to www.chaossoftware.com using a Plusnet adsl
connection, and given i've had DNS type issues lately, I am wondering if
it's this, or the site that is the problem?
Anyone care to see if they can get the site ... a grateful TIA

Seems it's a Plusnet issue then. Looks like they are going to finally
lose me as a customer on this account. One can only put up with so much
before it becomes a piss take....

Well, it's not a DNS issue, IE on my PN connection shows it attempting to
connect to the IP for the site. On my Easynet SDSL at work I can get to the
site, but not from PN. It might not be a PN issue - it could be that whoever
is hosting that site has blocked the IP ranges for PN accounts, possibly by
mistake. There is no response to a ping of the IP on my PN connection, but
there is on Easynet. Definitely not a DNS issue.

Yet the Plusnet 'droid' would have us believe no-one is reporting
issues.
I'm just making last minute decisions, and then I'm going to ask for my
MAC off of Plusnet.

Definitely an issue at Level3.net. Plusnet have peering via Level3.net when
trying to route to chaossoftware.com, whereas Easynet uses twtelecom.net

As you can, it's a routing failure somewhere between Level3.net and
chaossoftare.com's website. Nothing Plusnet can do to fix that.

It's a problem at Level3.net, not Plusnet. A traceroute shows it clearly.

Whatever the cause, it's the final straw for me so far as Plusnet is
concerned. I've asked for my MAC and am now looking at either Eclipse or
NewNet to migrate to.

It's affecting me as a Plusnet customer, therefore it's a Plusnet issue
AFAIC. (apologies, but what with one thing and another, Plusnet have
really pissed me off)
Unless you have the phone number of someone wandering round at "level3"
who I can call to ask if they wouldn't mind plugging their USB flash
drive back in..... :-)

Try 020 7954 5454, that's the main number for Level3.net in the UK.

Apparently as of the 5th October Level3.net turned off peering for all
non-paying peers. If Plusnet was paying for peering, then they've been
shafted. If not, then they'd better getting peering sorted out quick.

Hello,
The problem was outside of Level3's network. The reverse path was the
problem and the twtelecom.net peering with BT was at fault. BT have
since rectified the fault.

Thanks for all the info. I've asked for my MAC, but of course, being a
Broadband Plus account which came with FREE setup, I now realise that
this is actually *deferred* setup if you leave anytime within 5 years,
so I'm liable to pay £84 quid to migrate!!
Yes, I should have read the small print, yes, I feel a tosser for not
doing so, but what a rip-off.
I'm going to pay it just so as I can be rid of this debacle of an ISP
for good, but I have asked for a penny by penny breakdown of their
charges.

Yep, I realise the fault wasn't at plusnet /now/, but it has been the
final straw for me. Having been a loyal customer of plusnet for the best
part of 5 years, i've had enough, and today - of all days when I needed
to access that bloody site - tipped the balance.
