OTish Anonymous Domain Registration
Posted by Stephen@mailinator.com on August 9th, 2007

I have a .com registered in my own name. The registration details show
my home address and mobile number and obviously this info is available
to anyone who's bothered to look.

Should I be concerned about having this pesonal info available to the
world? I was thinking of changing to an anonymous domain reg service
but I'm not sure.

If it's a registration purely for personal as opposed to business use, most
registrars should allow you to keep your details private.

I don't think you can keep the contact details hidden for a .com address.

Nominet get quite uppity if you don't put the right contact details in
a .co.uk domain, but I seriously doubt any other registrar cares about
the details in a .com... Just change them to a fictional address and
live with it.

I get regular emails from the registrar that I use (totalregistrations)
about the .com/net/org domains I have, but nothing like the heavy
handidness of Nominet who threatened to cut-off a domain I'd registered
and made a very simple typo in the address!!!

Go to your registrar and ask for your address and phone number to be
removed.
I did it with my .co.uk domain. via my ISP, who arranged the domain for me.
Your name will still appear on whois sites but all other details will be
removed.
I'm not sure about the policy on .com addresses though

It's slightly different with .co.uk names - you'll find if you do a
'whois' on the domain that it says that the domain belongs to a private
individual. The details are still there, held by Nominet.

Eg.

Registrant:
Gordon Henderson

Registrant type:
UK Individual

Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their
address omitted from the WHOIS service.

Hm. Message is slightly different from when I last looked...
