OTish - Help sorting out an email system

My email system is in a bit of a mess and needs sorting out. Can
anyone offer some help & advice on a sensible system?

I currently I have a dot mac account, a fastmail.fm account, (a
university email account) and a gmail account. Everything gets
forwarded to gmail with each of the other accounts set up there so I
can send from them.

I receive about half a dozen or so emails a day. Most emails are from
mailing lists, e-alerts, etc.

I'm thinking of buying a domain from someone and using it as my only
email account and maybe, one day for a website.

I need/would like to have web access to email and calendar and be able
to sync them both with my laptop. This is what I thought dot mac would
be useful for.

I'm not too bothered about spam (although my gmail account gets a few
a day).

If I chose to have email through my own domain ie. stephen@xyz.com
would you recommend I setup my email service to forward to one of my
other accounts eg. dot mac so I can have the online access I need or
should I just try to use the service providers webmail?

Should I just have 1 email account for everything or do you think it's
a good idea to keep gmail as well. I'm not too bothered about having
an 'anonymous' account since I don't subscribe to anything I wouldn't
want anyone else to know about.

I thought maybe use gmail for registering for stuff on the internet,
mailing lists, etc and using my own domain email for everything else.

Thanks!
