Pay monthly broadband

Is there a list anywhere of which providers in UK do pay monthly (instead of 12 month) broadband contracts?

There don't seem to be many around...

Many thanks :-)

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Don't do that. Use plain text.

Several - Eclipse & Zen for starters.

Have a friend who was offered a free upgrade to the 1mb service last
month and it has been rubbish ever since, real bad. Now they just want
to get rid, Tiscali reckon the don't give MAC codes and the only way
to leave them is to cancel the account and they will release the line
....

Any idea how long all this will take, and what is the best plan of
action?

Bulldog have a 1-month contract.

Are there any cancellation fees?

Nearly every one (or in fact all) of the "pay monthly" (not 12 months
contract) BB suppliers have a CANCELLATION FEE built in - cheeky or what!!

Tiscalli have supposedly started to trial the issuing of MAC codes,
don't know how true or not this is.

If they don't & your friend is really lucky it could be 2 weeks for the
line to be released & then another couple of weeks (at most) to get the
new ISP to activate their service (it could be a lot shorter than that
but I'm being realistic). The only problem is that Tiscalli had a very
bad reputation for not releasing lines so that could be a bit/lot
longer..

* In small chunks, over 12 months (nearly all the other ISPs)
* In tiny chunks, over 60 months (Plusnet, I believe)

What's cheeky about that?

Still works out somehwat more expensive pro-rate at say 3 months, than a
full 12 months then

There are lots of us (yes we do monthly contracts).

Generally ISPs offering monthly contracts will charge the full activation
charge up front although some do offer deferred or "free" activation
charging with a termination fee if you leave before they've earned back
the activation fee + a little profit.

We charge it up front and accordingly there are no termination fees with
us.

No cancellation fee with Bulldog.

Virgin have monthly contracts.

But in the fine print they say that you have to pay a cancellation
charge of £50 if you cancel within the first three months.
This of course is used to pay BT for the activation.

So fair enough really.

you can minimise the effects of this fee by ordering the service using
an Egg Card
Who currently offer £40 cashback on connection to Virgin.

Thanks - great idea about the egg-card cashback. Kind of thing to be aware of.

Cheers!

Thanks - although they are quite pricey (yes I know it's 8 meg, but still) - on that note, as they give you a bulldog line (instead of BT) - is one guaranteed to get 8 meg???

No Bulldog are still subject to the laws of physics, although they may
wish you to think otherwise.
The limits may be moved down a bit, but a 512k line running on 10dB S/N
will still be unstable if run at/over 1M.
