- Posted by Mr-Reece on October 12th, 2004
Hello, my phone line upstairs is dead but my ADSL still works, the upstairs
extension runs straight from the master socket to a socket in the bedroom
where my modem/router plugs in and a phone is also hooked up. The phones
downstairs are ok but upstairs no dial tone no nothing, the ADSL is working
fine any one got any ideas?? By the way the phone is in working order and my
microfilters are set up correctly and working fine.

If you plug the phone into the socket directly, does it work ? If so, your
microfilter is kaput.

Yep, either pin 2 or pin 5 has become disconnected, at either end or even
possibly the cable between has been damaged

The phone is still dead microfilter or not, checked the cable today as it
runs outside the house looked okay, ill check the pin connections tomorrow,
I take it pins 2+5 carry the low frequency so if they were disconnected
phone would be dead but high frequency DSL would be ok??

Are you suggesting your extension cable has more than 2 wires (or more
usually 3 if pin 3 is also connected) ? It is not clear from your posts
exactly how your wiring runs and where you have microfilters. It is
"normal" to either extend all the standard telephone wiring which carries
both voice and adsl on the same pair (2-5) and add filters at each
extension, or alternatively to split the voice and adsl at the master socket
and add only voice extensions to the phone outlet on the filter there.
I can't work out what you have.

Could you have been cut off? My friend got cut off from his phoneline and his
adsl still worked. Have you reported a fault with BT?

I have had a phone fault and ADSL was still working fine until engineer came
to fix phone then I lost it all as he had disconnected the wires at the
pole.

I've seen cases reported before where ADSL apparently still works with only
one wire connected - don't ask me how! - whilst a phone requires at least 2
wires (2&5) to be connected.
So it sounds like one of the wires has come adrift somewhere between the
master and extension sockets.
