- PIPEX! Grrrrrrr
- Posted by Dan on July 4th, 2005
This makes me so angry grrrr.
Yesterday when I posted about I will be leaving Pipex after three years If I
see my connection being throttled. Guess what! It has. My torrents weren't
quite beaming down my connection as they normally do. (cornonation street)
Please save me the legal BS. So I tested speed test on ADSLGUIDE, and
downloaded a service pack from a microsoft site MAX speed on all was at the
most 800Kb/s. I even tried all three at once still the same. I measured this
using DU meter.
I admit I maybe classed as a hevay user. Average 60Gb a month but when I;m
getting speeds less than 1Mb I might as well be on there 1Mb £23 deal.
So before I say bye bye Pipex are other users experiecing this? Do you think
its just a technical glitch in the traffic management or are you all getting
full perfect nice speeds and I'm the only one thats been singled out and
getting subpar speeds?
Thankyou
Dan

Not noticed any throttling yet.
My partner likes to download missed episodes of eastenders, etc using bit torrent, but i wouldn't
class her or myself as a heavy downloaders (some months < 1GB). If they start throttling i'm off.
That was the whole point of choosing Pipex. No throttling, no download limits, etc.

Not all torrents are illegal - I regularly use them for linux distribs,
and my most recent one was a free mod for Half Life called "The Ship"

I'm still on 512K, waiting to be upgraded to 1Mb. I've noticed it being
slower generally, even when just surfing, in the past couple of months.
Pages seem to take longer to load. Speed tests on adslguide seem to show it
being slower than when I first subscribed about 15 months ago. If the 1Mb
upgrade doesn't improve things, I'll be jumping ship as well.

After my rant about Pipex my speeds are now increasing. (22:20 However I'm
still leaving Pipex because I don't like this traffic shaping business.
When would be the best time to ask Pipex for my MAC key? Say for instance my
direct debits payments to Pipex come every month on the 17th. I would hate
to pay Pipex for days that I'm not using their service.
Thankyou
Dan

If a gut is on max speed for months and then his speed drop the day they
announce throttling it is no coincidence.

Have you tried changing the default torrent port? Maybe using a random port
would help.

Definately being throttled due to heavy usage, between 6pm & 12am.
I guess you haven't had the following e-mail yet then:-

Dear PIPEX Broadband Customer,
Last week we announced important amendments to our broadband Terms and
Conditions (Ts & Cs) and
broadband Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). As you may be aware broadband is a
contended service
i.e. a shared service. The amendments are necessary to help us meet the
challenge of managing
our network during the busiest periods and to provide a fair service. PIPEX
has published a
statement together with some FAQs explaining these changes.
You can view them online at: http://www.pipex.net/legal/
Although we are not introducing a cap at this time, we are traffic managing
those customers who
have the greatest detrimental effect on other users of the network during
peak periods. It must
be stressed that only a tiny minority of our customer base will have their
traffic managed. Following
an in depth study, our data indicates that you fall into this category and
from 6PM this evening
your broadband service will be subject to network traffic management
measures.
What will this mean?
Your service is still unlimited. We have not implemented a cap. However,
your connection will be
subject to network traffic management between 6PM and 12 midnight, 7 days a
week. During these times
you will still be able to use your connection but you may notice a speed
reduction. Outside these peak
hours your connection will not be subject to network traffic management
measures; so we would suggest
you consider scheduling big downloads to take place outside peak hours to
make the most of your
connection.
These steps are all part of the process of investigating the most effective
way to provide a fair
service during our busy periods. It is for this reason that we have not
committed to a cap or a
particular solution at this stage.
What options do I have?
If you are happy to continue to use your service subject to traffic
management you need to take no
action. You have, in effect, a service which maybe the forerunner of a
product which we are
considering for residential customers who need to download large amounts of
data much of the day.
If you require the ability to download unusually large quantities of data at
anytime PIPEX is keen
to work with you to find a service more appropriate for your needs.
If you are unhappy with the changes to the terms and conditions of your
service then you are free to
migrate to another ISP or cancel your PIPEX service. If you have had your
service for less than a
year, PIPEX will also waive the cancellation fee, for a period of two weeks
from today.
If you would like to remain a PIPEX Broadband customer, but not be subject
to network traffic management,
you can, simply by regrading to a Lite 2000 service. PIPEX Lite Broadband
has a range of usage allowances
and they are not subject to network traffic management.
Please contact us on the details below so we can discuss your requirements
or answer any questions
you may have.
Kind regards
Adam Knights

Almost certainly you just hit some other problem, and it's not as a result
of Pipex managing your traffic. 60GB a month? That's nothing. I regularly do
150-200GB a month, and sometimes more. By Pipexs own words, they'll only be
targetting the top 1% of bandwidth hogs (most likely I'm in that 1%), and
only between 6pm and midnight.
And just who do you think you can move to that won't be doing something
similar in the near future and still be (reasonably) price competitive?
BTW, I had NO speed problems last night, getting 200Kps+ yesterday evening.
