- PlusNet & Fixed IP Query.
- Posted by Sun on September 4th, 2003
I've just signed up with PlusNet and have noticed that I have been given a
fixed IP address.
I thought this was an option as I would prefer a dynamically assigned IP
address.
Calling PlusNet tech support, I was told that there is no way to change this
as all their ADSL accounts are given fixed IP addresses however, I can
change my fixed IP address to a new fixed IP address now and then.
I just need somebody to confirm if this is actually the case or can I have
an dynamic IP address.
Thanks.

AFAIK this is the case.

am happy to also have a dynamic IP address. Peter M.

Of course many ISP's use long leases. Coupled with infrequent re-boots this
can mean keeping the same IP address semi-permantly even when it's sold as
dynamic.
I know someone with Pipex who has had the same "dynamic" IP address for
months.

Really? adslguide indicates Plus.Net offers multiple static IP addresses

Yes, as is the "always-on" nature of ADSL even with a dynamic IP you're
likely to have the same address for a while. I'm curious as to why a
dynamic IP is preferred, we would still recommend you take exactly the same
security precautions whether using a dynamic or static address.

Can you give any *legitimate* reasons?
Any of the three above would likely put you in breach of your ISP's AUP
anyway. If that's the sort of customer you were I'd want to make damn
sure you *were* on a static IP!

That's fair enough, as it's a RIPE requirement that netblocks be applied
for, even at /29 (5 usable IP addresses + router + network addr +
broadcast).

Yes, but for my needs that's really not a problem. Reverse lookups on
Zen or Eclipse there's no "user" information, just something like

While the rDNS for an ADSL account with us by default will be
username.plus.com it can be changed on request (via Contact Us on our
website) to 0-0-0-0.plus.com where 0-0-0-0 is your IP. The functionality
will shortly be built into our site so you can change it yourself.

perhaps not too clearly put, because I was meaning a fixed IP was not
optional (as in, one could have either fixed or dynamic) - they dish

I admit to doing that, despite the fact I am a network techician... I had a
perfectly valid reason for needing the extra IPs, knew the router supported
it but then couldn't work out how the hell you created un-numbered
interfaces on a Solwise 110 so that the eth0 interface borrows the ppp0 one.
I must admit once I did know it still took quite a long time to actually
manage to do it!!!

Your fault. Tough (or apologise and ask for reinstatement).
Ditto
In the normal case RIPE won't say anything more than something along
the lines of "PlusNet customer". (However, a reverse lookup on your IP
address will give your plus.com domain name.)
How can you simultaneously want a dynamic address, yet want four or more
static IPs? This doesn't make sense.

There's no need to get rude.
You originally asked why PlusNet couldn't give you a dynamic IP
address. Then in your examples you suggested that you might want
anonymity, and that one reason why this (hypothetically) might be
necessary is because of RIPE's addressing entry in its allocation
database.
I queried this, as I still don't see how you can tally wanting a dynamic
IP address with the (hyothetical) allocation of an IP address block
by RIPE.
I'm not going to respond further.

Is that true? From the very start (1992/3?), Demon provided customers

Hi,
Chris means that under RIPE rules, a netblock of /30 or smaller can be
anonymous, and contain the ISP info when you do an whois search. However, a
block larger than a /30 requires the user to publish their full contact
information ATM. Note that some ISP's do not follow this rule, so with Zen
for example, you can register a /29 without publishing your contact details.
I would expect the RIPE rules to change in the next year or so as more and
more home users have their own IP blocks.
