- Plusnet Newsgroups Late & Slow
- Posted by Road_Hog on June 27th, 2004
Messages still running at 6-12 hours behind posting times. Any other Plusnet
customers getting their messages on time? Newsgroups are so slooooow, makes
dial up on FreeUK look like lightening.
They've been talking about getting this sorted out for weeks now. I hope I
can be as slow and patchy with my direct debit payment?

No, it's not even connecting properly here today. However, it was only a
test as I normally use new.individual.net anyway.

Oh right, most of the people I know or knew who lived in the Beds / Herts
area seem to have either moved or are working away, there must be something
in the water...
How are you coping with the language ?! :~)
Glad to hear things are going well.

Ah, Durham. A very nice part of the world, and I've had an enjoyable 3

Okay, looking for recommendations for a reliable service on a 1Mb or 2Mb
connection, preferably on a monthly charge.
All comments welcomed.
Note, this posting will appear about 12 hours after I have sent it, if you
are using Plusnet for Usenet.

Well, here's the rub, you *might* have to look at text only, in which
case go to www.individual.net and get a free account. If you want
binaries you may be out of luck as I found when trying to use Teranews.
Plusnet do block attempts to obtain binary news feeds.
OTOH if you have a full blast broadband package you might be OK.

Only for accounts that are specifically restricted and stated as such. I
think this applies to just two accounts.
I think all the currently advertised accounts allow binary news feeds, P2P,
etc. The cheaper ones are restricted by having download limits so may not
be appropriate for significant binary downloads but that is different to
actually blocking those services.

That's why he said 'all *currently advertised* accounts'. None of the
accounts available for new users block binary feeds - only the old HomeSurf
and BizSurf accounts.

Only on the accounts that are £3/month cheaper due to this very restriction
(along with no p2p)!

Hi ex RHAer are you, like me, waiting for the promised return? :-)
As Phil said, on only two accounts that are cheaper for that reason, and it
is clear from the account info that was available before signup that there
is no access to binary groups and no P2P on those accounts.
None of the currently advertised ADSL accounts have this restriction. The
cheaper accounts now have a monthly download limit so, within that, you can
do what you like.
