PPPoE available on Home DSL?
Posted by Tiny Tim on October 15th, 2003

I stumbled across an ADSL site yesterday that I haven't seen before -
http://www.world-of-adsl.com/. The lead news story is about trials to allow
PPPoE on IPStream products. I'm not too clued up on this stuff but am I
right in thinking that this means we would be able to use a cable router
(i.e. ethernet router without modem) connected directly to the wall point? I
would like a wireless router but all the ADSL versions are over £100 while
all the cable versions are under £100, at least looking at the options on
www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk .

Can anyone confirm that I am understanding this correctly? If so it seems
like great news. What's the catch?

Here is the text of the announcement.....

BT Wholesale is pleased to confirm, that PPPoE as well as Point to Point
Protocol over ATM (PPPoA), is now supported on the BT IPStream Home and BT
IPStream Office products, allowing End Users to have greater flexibility in
their choice of CPE and drivers. The benefits to the Service Provider are in
having a greater choice of equipment options providing a greater opportunity
to reduce costs.

TECHNICAL PILOT
BT Wholesale is currently rolling out an auto-sense capability between PPPoA
and PPPoE sessions across the BT IPStream platform as part of an ongoing
upgrade. To allow us to test this capability BT Wholesale are inviting
Service Providers who are interested in taking part to register to join the
technical pilot of the auto sensing functionality. This pilot is planned to
run from mid-October to end December 2003.

AVAILABILITY
.. PPPoE has been available for new End User supply on BT Central 155Mbit/s
L2TP and BT Central Plus from 31 May 2003.

.. PPPoE has been available for new End User supply on BT Central 155Mbit/s
since August 2003.

.. Auto-sensing of PPPoA/PPPoE on BT Central 155Mbit/s L2TP was made
available at the end of August 2003.

.. Auto-sensing of PPPoA/PPPoE on BT Central 2Mbit/s, 10Mbit/s, 34Mbit/s
155Mbit/s Classic, is currently being rolled out across the BT IPStream
Platform and is due to complete by end Q3 2003/2004 .

Please note that PPPoE is only available on the BT IPStream Home and BT
IPStream Office products and will only support a single PPP session.

PPPoE has been available on some lines since July I believe - am not sure
its much use to most people in the UK (apart from AOL perhaps)

With PPPoE, I believe you will still need a ADSL modem - though it should
only need to support PPPoE Bridging which is common in the US so you might
be able to get a cheaper modem.. therefore the "cable router's" being sold
will not suddenly start to work here.
