- Provider Recommendation
- Posted by Essential Touch on August 19th, 2007
Hi All
I'm after an ADSL provider recommendation.
I source my e-mail, news-groups, web-hosting etc elsewhere so all I'm after
is a good solid connection with little or no restrictions on torrents, I
quite often have to exchange DVD9 images with colleagues in South East Asia
(not the best way of doing this I know, but I didn't set the system up)
I'll be accessing the connection with windows and Linux boxes.
I've looked at many review sites on the net but they always make a big deal
about mail and hosting which is of no interest to me. The same is true of
support, I would rather have a good working connection than great support
based in the UK, because if I have the first I don't need the latter.
I'm moving to Exeter next month if anybody has any specific knowledge of
ADSL there.

....ah, enjoy the silence...
everyone has their own ideas who to recommend, (check previous posts) the
only problem i have is that i like my isp, and i'm not sure i'd like to
share my connection (contention) with someone using the bandwidth that you
are likely to use, as it could adversly affect the service i receive.
sorry..........
good luck...

I'm with Newnet. Cannot remember ever having a connection problem but
news server is unreliable.
Try a comparison on Thinkbroadband.com or one of the other adsl
comparison sites.
Just hope your don't live near me and cause contention issues

Great contribution! So you're here for what you can get out of everyone
else. Presumably you think they're stupid to share information with you with
no gain for themselves.
What a git.

Just to clarify I was meaning no restrictions on the protocol far more than
the amount of data, having read about some ISPs blocking this (either all
the time or between certain hours). Although I do exchange disk images with
collegues, this is NOT 24/7 usually just one or two images a month (unless
we have a lot of work on) and then it's usually quite slow as connection
speed at their end isn't that great.

A number of providers provide unrestricted accounts IF you are prepared
to pay, Zen for instance, you can opt for 2GB mth downloads, OR 20GB
mth downloads, OR unrestricted downloads, at different price breaks.
No restriction for time of day, or on uploads (they aren't counted in
your useage).
Bandwidth seems good at all times of day.
Good customer service.
Some other providers are useless, fair use restricted hours, use of
cut price carriers with shiddy routers, so you often can't reach sites,
and having suckered you into a 12mth contract with special offers,
it's a tale of broken promises, premium rate help lines with an
incentive to keep you talking, and nothing gets sorted.
I haven't bought into them, but I've used many over a period of
time working on websites hosted with different ISP's, so have
got a feel for each of them, apart from sorting others problems.
Adequate bandwidth and stable performance costs money
and you get what you pay for.
Nildram is another possibility, but their customer service went
a bit pear shaped when Pipex took over, but performance is
still ok.
Tiscali sort of fair to good.
TalkTalk I didn't like at all, but the it was at the time
when Watchdog was having a go at them.

Take a look at the Entanet re-sellers and see if their packages suit
your needs; UKFSN or ADSL24, for example. There are others.

sorry if i misunderstood, i thought essential touch was hoping to use
torrent 24/7 firing dvd9 disk images around the world, this is, apparently,
not the case. as many users know torrent is both a blessing and a curse,
high availability of the data is great, the bandwidth used by several
million 14 year olds downloading the latest films (often in poor quality)
sucks up the bandwidth available to the rest of us.
Under-the-cosh's advice, below, is superb
