I am using the Vodaphone 3G card and when it finds a network it is
pretty fast - ~ 380k download - but networks are not that widespread yet.

seems promising ...

1mb decent broadband I tend to get about 120KB/s
56k modem approx 5KB/s

so in line with those ive mentioned are you saying approx 38KB/s
download? (how about upload?)

is there a current listing of areas covered by the faster network? the
sites i was goin to use gprs at are mainly located around oxfordshire at
the moment. to be able to get a decent connection for the odd email here
and there (some have cad drawings attached) would be ideal.

The dark red bits have 3G coverage. The 3G cards will fallover to GPRS usage
when there's no 3G signal.

Orange do a 3G card as well. Coverage details at
http://coverage.orange.co.uk

O2 launched their 3G/GPRS/WiFi card yesterday. Should be in the shops before
the end of the year.
