Aha! .... Its working now. (Please ignore my last message in reply to
Pedt. There is a MISTAKE in Demon's documentation.

Demon's "step by step guide to converting you Demon dial-up account to
ASDL" [paper copy, issue date 24.08.04] clearly says to log on with
username of "bt_test_user@your connection pipe", and defines that as
"the section of your ADSL login after the @".

Changing this to "bt_test_user@startup_domain", *and* telling the
connection to "obtain an IP address automatically" seems to have done
the trick.

I shall now take the plunge and upgrade my SDU. If everything goes
quiet it could be for one of two reasons :-)
