Re: What is a microfilter?

Bobby bashed at the keyboard and said..:

A microfilter is a small device that plugs into your normal BT telephone
socket and splits the line into both a standard BT telephone socket and a
ADSL broadband socket.

You must have one microfilter connected to each BT socket on the line the
ADSL service is enabled for even if you will not connect the ADSL modem /
router at that point.

The microfilter must be the first device plugged into the BT socket.

Failure to have a microfilter correctly installed on every socket may result
in interference (buzzing noises etc.) on your telephone and / or reduced
performance and possible loss of service on your broadband access.

Being new to ADSL I'd like to tack some more questions on to this
thread....

Do microfilters need to be plugged into all phone sockets, even if
they are not used at all (no equipment connected at all...)

Does ADSL exhibit a decline in performance if things aren't quite
right, or is it usually a go/no go type of thing.

You only need to use a microfilter when there is
something (phone, fax, etc) plugged into a socket.

It's obvious if you get it wrong. The most common
problems are hissing noises when using the phone
or ASDL dropping out when making a voice or fax
call.

Here's two FAQ on Broadband which you can read if you want.
http://www.freeserve.com/help/broadbandfaq.htm
http://62.172.198.79/broadband1/what.../faqs/faqs.asp
Hope this helps
I think microfilters are only plugged into phone sockets that are used.
