- Restarting Cable Modem Problems
- Posted by David G on November 3rd, 2006
Hi all,
This one is starting to drive me nuts. (LONG)
Have NTL Cable Modem. (Portsmouth Area)
Add-on (Novatech) Wireless Router + wired network + two hubs.
Ever since July 06 when we had the nasty Thunderstorms I have had regular
problem with my net connection. It seems roughly every two days I have to
switch both my cable modem and router off to get my internet access back.
Before that time net access was continuous and only changed my ip address
due to powercuts or service upgrades.
This is very frustrating as each time my IP address changes and I have to
keep changing my settings for software I use for remote access.
First off when the problems occurred I though it was the wireless router. It
was a cheapo one off ebay but had served my well for nearly two years
without fault.
New router and same problems. So NTL quickly replaced the Cable Modem still
the same problems. Now I get fobbed off by NTL (India off shore call centre)
everytime and for last month I've just gone through switch off restart
routine. But now I want it resolved.
Before I do a major rant to NTL (again), is this problem happened with
anyone else?
On my old router I had the mac address of the Cable Modem cloned? Would this
affect the performance of my new router? The new router has no cloned mac
address.
Just though I'd tap the knowledge of the world before I have a pop at NThell
again.
Thanks in advance.

It hasn't happened to me, but you could trey the following:
- Connect your PC directly to the cable modem and run this for a few days.
If it's still a problem, then it is probably the cable modem or the outside
cable. Get NTL to check the cable outside.
- You can use dyndns.org to have a dns name linked to your IP address, so
that if your IP address changes, you don't have to change your dns name.
Don't forget NTL use dynamic IP addressing and therefore the IP address can
change at anytime.

I am on Telewest/Blueyonder and clone the mac address of my main computer to
the router
So the modem thinks it is connected to the same piece of equipment
whether I have the router in place or not .... saves changing my IP
address.
unless NTL run a slightly different system of Mac address rendering ?

Hi,
I have connected a laptop to the Cable modem and have lost connection with
the connection showing as limited or no connectivity.
So it must be the Cable modem, NTL had the cheek last time to tell me to
purchase a new router.
Just eliminating possibilities, problem is the engineers never come to the
house when I there and if I was to book them to come, they probably not turn
up and waste a day off work.
