router problem or XP problem? can't access some www from one pc.

Help, I'm a bit stuck here.

I have two pcs, XP and win98 both connected to same router.

Both have worked reliably at various times, but at present the XP machine
won't contact some sites.

I know it's not a DNS problem, as I have used NSlookup, and it finds the
sites with no problem.
I can even ping the sites, but web pages won't come up in either IE6 or
Mozilla.

As I have the two machines side by side on the same desk, I am getting very
confused as all the sites connect fine on the '98 machine.

For example,
www.smile.co.uk will connect, but the login server won't.

www.evelom.co.uk wont work.

even the plusnet news server, usenet.force9.net won't talk to XP, but it
will to '98, while the mail servers are fine for both machines. It is not a
particular protocol, as I can connect by https to www.dabs.com on either
machine.

Any ideas? I can find people with simlar problems on groups.google.com, but
no solutions.

Nat

I had this same problem.
I fixed it by adjusting the MTU figure.
There are utilities for setting this. Google this group to find them.
1458 rings a bell for a common setting, although I think I had to set mine
to 1456.

HTH.

Reduce the MTU on your XP machine and see if that sorts it.

You will find DrTCP at www.dslreports.com..

Thanks guys, that does seem to have sorted it.

I had tweaked the setting on the old machine, but having moved house, new
phone line, and bought a new pc I had forgotten about that problem?

Still don't understand why it had worked sometimes but not others, perhaps
the route in between had changed.
