Silly question - connecting router to existing switch
Posted by no-name on June 4th, 2004

a small LAN is wired to a pre-existing switch
one of those cheap ones mentioned in an earlier thread
the 8-port "DabsValue" I think

now broadband Internet is being added to the LAN
by adding a Draytek Vigor 2600 ADSL-modem/router/firewall

warning: there now follows a very silly question

what cable is used to connect the Draytek to the switch

is it an ordinary patch cable -
the same as connects the PC's to the switch ???

or does it have to be a crossover cable ???

AFAIK the 2600 doesn't auto sense uplinking, so a *crossover* cable is
needed

According to the manual http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2600plus.html
it is a "Four-Port 10/100BaseT autosensing Ethernet switch"
It doesn't have a dedicated uplink port so wouldn't one of the four ports
autosense the uplink?

curious

Steven.

all 8 ports are auto-sensing meaning either cable will work.

If it *is* auto-sensing, either will work - it doesn't matter.

How many devices are there in your LAN? Unless you need more than 4 of the 8
ports on your Dabs switch, why not just plug them all into the new router.
It might even be faster unless the PCs only have 10Mbps network cards.

use the same cables as you do to connect your PCs to your existing switch,
or, as Tim suggests connect your PCs directly to the Draytek.

Ah it depends. Does the switch have a port marked uplink ? if not you
will need a crossover normaly, But the draytek site say the ports of
the 2600 will auto sense this and adjust if rquired , so the answer is
proberly no use what ever you want.
