Sky / Netgear router oddity ?
Posted by Colin Wilson on July 7th, 2007

Wonder if anyone else has had this problem...

If my router is up for a week or so, it stops accepting the admin/sky
login to access or view the settings / stats.

Rebooting the router returns things back to normal.

Normal internet access is seemingly unaffected when this happens.

The only time you need to access the router is when you do have a
problem, so I'd say as long as you are aware of this quirk don't
worry, but if you really are then try re-flashing the firmware on your
router by using the update file on your SKY CD.

My noise margins vary wildly though (~9.x to 4.x) and I need to keep a
regular check on them to know when to reboot the damn thing - only, I
can't reboot via the web interface if it refuses to let me in to it
:-}

The unbranded ebuyer cheapo I bought several years ago, which didn't
fall over once, or need reflashing.

Posted by Colin Wilson on July 8th, 2007

I'd already done that upon installation as i'd read similar reports.

Know how that one feels, but it varies over the 24 hours not 7 days so
if you get to reboot it at the correct time of day (& there aren't any
glitches/noise spikes) then it should remain constant & if it does
fall over the next day all you've got to do is train it down the next
day. Even if you get stale sessions, these will normally occur over a
24 hour period so at no time are we talking about a period of 24 -48
hours but not 7 days.

Have you tried to reflash the firmware from the SKY disk yet?

I like to see the extra 70-100k speed where possible if i'm using it,
rather than leaving it "stable" :-}

Not yet, but afaik the firmware is the same as the one on the router
already.

Well that will mean booting it everyday, so we're not talking about 7
days, so where's the problem?

It still could be useful. It's not unknown for the firmware to get
corrupted....

The Zyxel cheapie I got for my mum which cost around £45 and included a
USB2 wifi plug for the PC. It's been on for getting on 6 months without
so much as twitching.

You're wasting your time telling him - others have put this in the other

I could, but as i'm only a couple of months into the contract, and the
contract says i'm supposed to use theirs...

Sadly, it also isn't ADSL2 capable afaik, which the Sky one is.

Thanks for those pearls of wisdom. Did you use google to find these
posts ?

Sometimes it stays stable for a few days at the higher speed, so it
might be left for longer periods without a reboot.

Might give it a go then - thanks :-)

When I was using one on Plusnet, in the days where unlimited meaning
unlimited (yes I used to thrash it on occaisions), my 3Com would lock

only company who actually acknowledge why it may be happening (out of
Netgear, D-Link, Linksys & 3Com)
