Slightly OT: VOIP in the UK.
Posted by Ian Stirling on August 7th, 2003

In a few months, I expect to have ADSL, as my exchange has hit its trigger
point.
I currently have homehighway, and find the other number occasionally
usefull.

Is there anywhere offering a virtual phoneline at costs well below a
real one with actual copper?

Incoming and outgoing calls UK, I don't especially care about international.

We looked at offering this service, VoIP down the ADSL, if you forget the
QOS issues the cost of the VoiP boxs was the other problem.
Its fine as a VPN to head office with the normal standard phone as backup,
however you can get some great rates via IDA providers

I was more meaning a software solution on the end, rather than an actual
'box'.
It would of course need spare bandwidth, and be probably less reliable than
a conventional phone.

IDA?

As for your original request, there was a discussion about this earlier
in the week in the uk.telecom newsgroup (http://makeashorterlink.com/?
T1C423685). Hopefully that'll give you a few ideas about which software
packages to choose.

ahh, that'll be your downfall

Seriously though, I've just done a bit of researching and it looks like
SJ Labs (the people who created SJphone) are releasing a Linux version
this month: http://www.sjlabs.com/products/sjp-x.html

Otherwise, try posting in uk.comp.os.linux ... according to
groups.google.co.uk no-one has mentioned VOIP in that group since last
October, so another discussion about VOIP & Linux seems due.
