- Talk Talk bar over 70,s from signing up for phone/broadband packages
- Posted by Sunil Sood on September 3rd, 2006
"After walking the Great Wall of China and making plans for a trip to
Russia, Shirley Greening-Jackson thought signing up for a new internet
service would be a doddle.
But the young man behind the counter had other ideas. He said she was
barred - because she was too old.
The 75-year-old would only be allowed to sign the forms for the Carphone
Warehouse's TalkTalk phone and broadband package if she was accompanied by a
younger member of her family who could explain the small print to her.
Mrs Greening-Jackson, who sits on the board of several charities, said: "I
was absolutely furious. The young man said, 'Sorry, you're over 70. It's
company policy. We don't sign anyone up who is over 70."

I read that the new age Discrimination laws come into effect this week.
Carphone Warehouse could be in for a shock if someone over 70 decides to
fight back. Unfortunately I am only 62 so can't do it.

That's quite astonishing. However, I suppose they're trying to protect
themselves against being accused of signing up confused pensioners who
didn't understand what they were doing.

I thought that age discrimination was illegal now.
Now just turned 70 with a PhD in Computing, so also insulted.

If that were the case they could cover it in T&C like their liability

I wrote that! Dave Fawthrop was quoting me.
Fair enough, but it seems unfair to give the over 70s a get-out clause,
while anyone under 70 would be tied in to a long contract.
Isn't that just discrimination in another form? Positive
discrimination, perhaps? I've never liked that.

I can see their logic - but suggest they test all customers reading

Seems reasonable to me, the Post Office staff seem to have the monopoly
on signing up confused OAP's to phone service anyway.
Its my personal opinion that people over 70 should be locked up in
institutions

Forget the Post Office. AOL wouldn't even exist in the first place if

So which institution are you in yourself, Peter? You're sounding a
wee bit geriatric yourself there matey :-))

The original Post Office phone service (SP tele2) was prefix, good value,
good terms, and cash up front (so the extent you could get burned was
limited). The PO reneged on this and introduced their current CPS or LLU
offerings. Some call charges quadrupled in price and the T&C sucked.
Why not arrange early admission for yourself while you are at it as you
clearly warrant it.

Seeing the bad publicity "3" had over this sort of thing I am not surprised
TalkTalk have taken this view....
