Text groups with 'binary' names?
Posted by Terry Pinnell on September 28th, 2004

Am I right that 'text-only' news servers like the excellent (free)
News.individual.NET excludes any group with the string 'binaries' in
the name? Amongst several other groups I'd like to be able to get in
my 'text instance' is alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.d, also a text group
despite its name.

I just tried joining alt.binaries.news-server-comparison, which I
understand is a 'normal' text-based group for discussing the merits of
different servers for binary use. But Agent 1.93 could retrieve no
headers. At first I thought that meant the group was extinct, but I
quickly realised it's probably just not offered. (Presumably, the
reason Agent displayed it when I chose the All Groups view was because
I'd previously been subscribed to it using APN, which does carry
binaries, and Agent has stored it even though this news server doesn't
offer it? Why would NIN have it in their list?)

Looks like it! I use news.individual.net, and have just looked at the groups
offered. There is nothing at all starting with "alt.binaries".
