Can someone explain to me why on earth anyone would get an SDSL 250 line
costing £1900+vat for the first year (plus ISP costs), when they could get
an ADSL 512 line for around £350 *all in* for the year, which has the same
upload speed but a download speed that is twice as fast?

Contention is one reason - 10:1 is the last figure I heard quoted for
all SDSL IP Stream based products.

The other is SLAs. BT will provide an (almost) water tight SLA for
its customers - so the reliability of SDSL is *much* higher than
ADSL..

There is a caveat to all this as well mind. BT IP Stream SDSL will
not support any voice on the line. So a dedicated line would be
required as well.
