Zone Alarm Security Suite registration in UK
Posted by The Invisible Man on October 29th, 2005

Hi, this is something I posted elsewhere but got no response - not even
a flame.

Anyone here got any knowledge of registering ZA products purchased in
the UK? I got the paid for version because I am not the only person who
uses our equipment and I wanted something simple and integrated. Seems
to work very well. Previously I used Norton.

I bought ZA Security Suite 6 for 2 users competitive upgrade from Amazon
recently. There was a note inside to email zamu@avanquest.co.uk quoting
a long code so that they could send me a valid serial key. Until then I
only got a 14 day licence.

6 days later after 3 emails and 2 phone calls to Avanquest they supplied
me with 2 serial keys. These were inserted and extended my expiry date
to 25 days. Avanquest tell me that ZA have to check their records in the
US and that I should get an increase to 365 days within about 10 days.
(8 days gone so far)

Is this how Zone Alarm normally work in the UK? If so it is not
surprising that their paid for products are lacking in market penetration.

In a word, No - at least not how they used to work.

Although I now use the free version, I previously purchased the paid up
version via their website with no problems at all.

Hi
You could try raising it directly with Steve Gibson (Zone Alarms)?

If you have the option still, the AVG antivirus plus firewall is a much
better product IMO and much cheaper. Two licenses cost the same as a
single ZA license and I have found their tech support to be virtually
real time e-mail conversation and extremely good.

AVG is only anti-virus and firewall. If you want spyware, IME one

No, its not. Did you try just going to their website and registering
the product? Or contacting ZA direct?

FWIW I've always registered / renewed licenses directly on their
website.

You forgot a couple of other worthwhile apps - cwshredder and
spywareblaster. If they don`t do the trick, an up-to-date download of
Sysclean from Trend Micro and HijackThis will see off anything that`s
left.

I've been using the free versions of all the above for nearly a year, and so
far they've kept my machine clear of viruses and spyware etc. An ideal
combination IMO.

I recently sorted out a friends' machine that had AVG, but he suspected
there was something on the drive it wasn't spotting. I threw Sysclean at
it, and it found about 4 different infected files sat on the HD. I don't
remember any of them being active, which is always a GoodThing(TM), but
the fact it hadn't spotted them in the first place is a little worrying.

FWIW I use Avast, and regularly rescan my system with Sysclean, and its
never found anything I didn't know about (I have some sample virus files
for reference purposes sat on there)

I had to contact avanquest to get the serial keys for the first year
which is included in the purchase price. IF I renew next year I will do
it on-line.
I still have 15 days left of the 25 so will leave it a few more days
before making a real nuisance of myself.

OK, when you re-read what I posted about Avast and Sysclean...

I like the AVG antivirus, but I couldn't find the firewall anywhere near
as easy to use as (even) the free ZA firewall.

ZA understands that I might want to run a server application
(e.g. vncserver). AVG required me to create a special rule from scratch.

I'd happily recommend AVG a/v but not their firewall. Has anyone
compared the ZA antivirus solution with similarly priced solutions?

I've just sent my first email to zamu. I saw your posting before
buying, so I emailled Amazon and ZoneLabs before ordering; neither
expected me to have any problem.

Previously I've always bought directly from the ZoneLabs site, but
after many emails exchanged it transpired that they do not sell or
support the multi license or competitive upgrades products outside of
the US and Canada.

The only way to buy a five license upgrade was from Avanquest and then
use them for support. ZoneLabs will not sell anything other than the
basic full priced package to anyone in the UK and will not support it
if you buy it elsewhere.

The saving was large enough to convince me to try Avanquest, but if in
a years time I'm not happy then I'll probably switch to AVG from
Grisoft.
