- 2GB vs 1GB - runtime

Should I expect much difference in power consumption with 2GB of RAM
vs 1GB? Thinking of getting 2GB merely for future-proofing, as 1GB
should be plenty for Windows XP Pro and typical office applications.
This will be in a Dell D630 with a 6 cell battery.

no; in the scheme of things (as a percent of the total laptop), memory
isn't a big power consumption item.

Virtually no difference. Yes RAM uses power like everything else, but
not all that much. Something tells me that you won't miss the extra 1
or 2 seconds worth of battery life. (if that).

plus with 2GB you'l lget things done a little faster which might save a few
seconds on the battery (:>)

Actually, I bet you save battery life, as you will have less swapping to the
HD.

What people haven't mentioned and maybe it doesn't matter to you. But I
bet if you use standby on battery power a lot, more RAM will reduce the
previous standby time. Maybe up to half of what it was previously.

which would tend to reduce power consumption.
I guess when a laptop is put into hibernation mode, the contents of the
ram are saved, so I assume with more ram, it needs more disk work to
save, which would increase the power used.
Like everyone else, I suspect it will make little overall difference,
but there are two more effects that nobody else mentioned.
