560Z IBM Thinkpad Windows 98 Fresh install...Help!
Posted by tomcee on March 8th, 2006

Hello:

I need to do a fresh install of Win98 to an IBM 560z.

I have the Win98 CD and the driver disk for the IBM4x PCMCIA CD Drive.

I created Win98 Startup disks on another Win98 machine, then added the
CD400xxx drivers to the config.sys.

On startup when telling the system to boot with CD support the system
locks up!

Any help?

Thanks
Tomcee

Did you try using an unmodified win98 boot floppy

Almost certainly because you haven't enabled the several layers of
device drivers reqd. to wake up the PCMCIA interface. ISTR IBM has the
necessary s/w available as a download from ibm.com ...

Thanks for the reply. I've gotten past the card services. Install
seems to go ok, but then (at the end of the windows install), the
install program is looking for a bunch of .dll and vxd files that it
can't seem to find (and are not on the win98 install disk) such as:
dhcpcsvd.dll, icmp.dll, inetmib1.dll, and other .vxd and .sys files.
I've told the install to skip these files, but am concerned that the
system is somewhat wounded! Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
TomCee

Those files all relate to TCP/IP networking ... can't remember now, but
maybe those files were in subdirs of the win98 installation folder ....
in which case, let the installation finish, by skipping those missing
files, then afterwards (assuming you can boot to a regular windows
desktop) remove all apparently installed network ccomponents (via the
"network" control panel applet) and re-add the components you want.

Thanks again. It appeared that during install, windows setup could not
find the cd drive.! Curious, as it was being installed from the cd
drive.

Anyhow, I did search the win98 disk for these files and didn't find
them there...

I'm now copying all the .vxd and .dll files from another win98 machine
and will copy them to the \windows\system folder on the problem
machine. Then will try to install the network stuff.

TomCee

I *think* that when you set up networking (TCP/IP) that those files will
be found and installed properly.

I _think_ what happens is that the CD drive works OK (obviously) for the
first phases of the install procedure, but when windows setup gets to
probing for PCMCIA interfaces, there's trouble detecting and enumerating
devices which are in use. ISTR windows 98 SE asks if a PCMCIA i/f is in
use for the installation .....

This should all be unravelled out when windows boots after installation.
