- Adjust video memory in Gateway MX8711
- Posted by Joe2Shoe on November 6th, 2007
A friend has a gateway MX8711 laptop. It has the Intel® Graphics Media
Accelerator 950 which used up to 224 MB shared video memory.
In the BIOS it says the video card is using 8MB memory. He can not
find any settings in the BIOS to change the memory.
How do you change the memory to use the 224MB maximum memory?
Thank you for your help.

This is normal. The BIOS sets up the shared video memory for something
low like 8MB to display the text on the screen. Although Windows and
other OS change this. You can see what Windows is using under Display
properties. Or run dxdiag.
I heard the way the Intel chip tells Windows how much memory to use
depends on the amount of memory that is installed in the computer. So if
you want to use the maximum amount of video memory, you need to install
the maximum amount in the machine.
Now I have two laptops with the Intel 915GM/GMS. They both came with
512MB of RAM and the display uses 64MB. And I boasted both to 1GB of
RAM, but they still only use 64MB. Although both machines can handle
2GB, but I don't have the chips to boost them any higher than 1GB each.
And the Intel 915 is supposed to use up to a maximum of 128MB.

the 915 is gma900; the 945 has intel gma950 video. Vista aero is
supported on gma050, not on gma900.

Who said anything about Vista Aero? The OP wanted to know how to boost
the BIOS use of 8MB of video RAM.
