Any Laptops Sold That Aren't Loaded With Crapware?
Posted by DLKR on April 2nd, 2005

None of the laptop sellers sites mention how much crapware is loaded on their
machines.
I'd like to limit my choices to those that contain no (or very little)
crapware - or, if that's not possible, to those where the crapware can be
easily removed.
This wouldn't be the prime criteria in selecting my laptop but, everything else
being equal, would be a strong selling point.

Just borrow an XP CD and do a clean install. Turn on system restore so
you can go back if a problem occurs down the line. Better yet, keep a
copy of the fresh installed drive in a folder on your desktop PC
and/or a DVD.

For all of them except Sony, it's easy to remove the crapware by
reformatting the disc. I've heard of some bizarre crap in Sony
machines that prevent you from installing a new OS if you delete the
old one. You can't even upgrade from the crapware Microsoft OS that
they give you, to a new Microsoft version.

I've done half a dozen Vaio's with zero trouble. But yes, they were
the worst. Shipped with over 30 cases of spy/malware on them.

Powernotebooks without any OS if you like. Go to the local stores and
buy the OS of your choice and install.

I just got a new T42p; hardly anything needed to be removed.

I don't think there are any Thinkpads in current production that you
can buy without a Windows preinstall.

they the older ones also ship with a full version of win xp encripted so you
can't use it, lol

So what? This notion that buying a machine with a Windows preinstall and
then wiping the Windows to install something else is tantamount to
desecrating Mom, Apple Pie, and The Girl You Left Behind strikes me as just
plain silly. If you don't want Windows just wipe out the bloody Windows.

As for depriving Microsoft of the ten bucks or whatever that IBM pays in
royalties (assuming IBM pays anything at all) I could really give a
damn--that kind of petty hatred of Microsoft is just plain nuts.

Well yeah, I reverse-defenestrate computers with great joy (reverse
defenestration = throwing Windows out of a computer). But that
doesn't mean that Windows doesn't arrive on the machine waiting to be
removed, which is what the OP asked about.

There is also the matter of the silly "designed for Windows" sticker
that needs to be peeled off, which sometimes leaves some residue to
clean up afterwards. And while some users peel off the Windows
sticker the minute they take the brand new machine out of the box and
before they reverse-defenestrate the hard drive, I couldn't bring
myself to do that because I was concerned about being able return the
machine if something was wrong with it. So I left it on, but it made
me feel dirty. I guess I should take it off now.

He did? He was asking about "crapware". While you may equate "crapware"

Oh, such a horrible burden. My heart bleeds for you.

Sounds like you've got some real problems if having a particular sticker on
a machine causes you such anguish. I shudder to think what you feel when
some young lady puts you down in a bar.

Yeah thems my sentiments too!!! Wish they would just sell the
laptops empty so can put in linux or something useful and not
obvious to virus hackers!

They sell desktops without any OS. So I don't see why they don't for
laptops.

In fact would put some of my old commodore 128 stuff if it would
function on a MS (monkey circus) OS.

Actually you can. As there are a few free Commodore 128 Emulators out
there.

Cheers!

Huh? It's easy to buy desktops with no OS. I may get one from
http://endpcnoise.com but there's tons of cheaper generic ones.

Actually the Wal-Mart store sells:

Wal-Mart starts selling $498 Linux-based laptop

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000940024326/

They also sell Linux desktops.

Cheers!

There are some laptops you can buy with no OS, but only from small
vendors reselling generic models. You end up paying about as much as
you'd end up paying a higher volume vendor for the same hardware with
Windows pre-installed. It's hard to escape.

http://www.pricewatch.com/h/mn.aspx?i=336&f=1

is Pricewatch's selection of no-OS laptops. Maybe I'll check this
next time I'm in the market. I keep coming back to Thinkpads though.

Anyway, wasn't the question, "Why don't they sell
laptops without OSs?"
