- Battery Life

I've got a Sager 3300 (p700, 14" active mtx screen), and have rarely used the battery. After a couple of years, the "smart" battery claims to be 100% charged, but won't run the system for more than a few minutes (just enough time to boot up and start working).
It was my impression that the NiMH batteries didn't suffer from a memory effect. Then again, it has been a few years, and batteries don't last forever. Is this a case of a smart battery being too smart for it's own good (can it be fixed) or is this component kaput?
TIA
Mitch
