Best Antivirus Software??
Posted by Maagman on September 13th, 2003

Hi group. I have become less than satisfied with Norton AV and was looking
for suggestions for alternatives. I tried McCaffey's product from '99 to 01
and didn't really like that either. Do you guys have any specific
preferences?

Thanx

Maagman

Hi Maagman -

I personally like eTrust from Computer Associates
(http://www3.ca.com/Solutions/Product.asp?ID=156) - I have it on both my
laptop and desktop computers. Not so obtrusive as Symantec's or McAffe's
products (I've used both), is reasonably priced (I don't remember the
original cost, but updates are currently about $10 a year) and has virus
definition updates nearly every day.

When I'm working computers belonging to friends who don't want to pay for an
antivirus program, I recommend and install AVG (http://www.grisoft.com).
AVG is free for personal use, isn't too obtrusive on system resources and
has very regular virus definition updates.

Jef

Been using AVG for 3 years now and no problems, unlike Norton.

Great reviews, great support, *very* easy on system resources.

I use F-Prot <http://www.f-prot.com> Antivirus. It costs me about $25/year
for almost daily updates over the Internet. It's regularly rated at the top
in virus detection, but then so are the other half-dozen or so top
anti-viruses. I find this particular product best for me as an individual
user -- it's inexpensive and support is quite good.

If I were picking an anti-virus for a company of more than, say, 25 people,
I'd probably go with Sophos <http://www.sophos.com> AntiVirus. Sophos has
much better IT-level support for networks, etc., and its pricing for companies
is competitive. Last I checked, it was pretty expensive for individual users,
though. And (OB disclosure) since I'm friendly with the head of Marketing
Communications at Sophos, I know that their main focus is business users, not
home users.

While you're at it, be sure to get:

* A good software firewall if your computer doesn't sit behind a good
hardware firewall. I recommend ZoneAlarm <http://www.zonelabs.com>. The
basic version is free, and it has protected my computer from all sorts of
trojans and hacker attacks over the last couple of years.

* Lavasoft <http://www.lavasoftusa.com/> Ad-Aware. The basic version is free,
and it does a wonderful job finding and removing "spyware" -- software
installed on your computer without your knowledge or permission that tracks
your Internet use, normally to feed a marketing database and target ads at
you. You do NOT want that cr*p running on your computer.

I have a friend who is IT manager at a mid-sized company. They use McAfee
and recently merged with a company that used Norton. When he put a some of
the Norton computers onto his network, McAfee immediately found viruses.
Out of curiosity, he left the viruses alone, updated the Norton virus
descriptions and re-scanned the infected machines and Norton did not find
the viruses.

I just had that same problem with PC-cillin and Norton. PC-cillin, which
I've run for 3 years, didn't detect a virus but Norton 2004 did so I'm
switching.

Some of the responses I read indicate that one AV found viruses that others
didn't.

Early in the PC usage (1983> when people didn't trust the AV programs) we
discovered that if someone had more than one virus scan program on their
machine, one of them would find the signatures in the other AV data files
and report that as a virus.

One of our support people had many people scanning their machines for
viruses, eventhough at that time we were not networked.

It is very important when changing from one AV to another that the old one
be deleted completely.

Norton Antivirus 2003 does not detect a virus which trend micro's
housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/hous...start_corp.asp
finds. BKDR_AMTIS.B in my kernel32.dll.

After a couple of years with Norton I am looking for an alternative
too. It's got too expensive now as well.

Tom.
