- Boot to USB HDD?
- Posted by Knack on October 1st, 2003
Had a bad experience recently with WinXPH (OEM): System restore couldn't
find an entry point, msconfig utility couldn't get the machine out of
Safe Boot, the 3rd party freeware utility ERDNT couldn't do a complete
restore of the registry, and much to my exasperation, Hewlett Packard
didn't include a WinXPH CD; instead a set of System Restore (to virgin
config) disks. Those disks didn't contain a Recovery Console. I
understand that some Sony VAIOs have the same licensing agreement with
Microsoft too.
Disgusted with WinXPs recovery provisions, I'd like to install a
parallel WinXP on an external USB HDD. Can laptops be booted from an
external USB HDD? All? Some? None?

It depends on if the BIOS supports booting from USB. It varies.

In article <3F7B40D2.DB368A67@hotmail.com>, zok9@hotmail.com says...
of the PC vendor, not the OS.
You can only boot from a USB HDD if the BIOS supports it.

I have the similar experience with yours. Mostly if your laptop's BIOS
supports it, you will booted from USB HDD. This is common. But some time it
is not always like that. I found that most USB 2.0 HDD can work well, but
USB 1.1 HDD not. I cannot tell them!
Good luck
